{"id":4343,"date":"2026-07-24T16:58:56","date_gmt":"2026-07-24T16:58:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4343"},"modified":"2026-07-24T16:58:56","modified_gmt":"2026-07-24T16:58:56","slug":"silicon-valley-is-completely-divided-over-chinese-ai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4343","title":{"rendered":"Silicon Valley Is Completely Divided Over Chinese AI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A huge debate<\/span> is brewing in Silicon Valley over the proliferation of Chinese-made artificial intelligence tools, particularly \u201copen-weight\u201d AI systems that, by some measures, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chinas-open-ai-models-are-challenging-silicon-valleys-playbook\/\" class=\"text link\">can compete with<\/a> or even outperform some of the best US models. My WIRED colleague Hugo Lowell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-white-house-is-trying-to-figure-out-what-to-do-about-chinese-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">has written<\/a> about the Trump administration\u2019s internal debate on how to handle these Chinese models. Among AI companies in the Valley, the issue is proving even more divisive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A top concern in both DC and the Valley relates to distillation, in which a less capable AI model is trained on the outputs of a more powerful one. In June, Anthropic accused the Chinese tech giant Alibaba of illicitly stealing its IP through distillation attacks. Then, earlier this week, the White House said that it believes the Beijing-based Moonshot AI had developed its Kimi K3 model by distilling Anthropic\u2019s Fable 5 model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another big concern is how quickly China\u2019s models are appearing and spreading. An open-weight AI model has its core components made public, so that it can be fine-tuned to suit a user\u2019s needs. But they don\u2019t have the kinds of guardrails on which Anthropic has been building its reputation. Yasir Atalan, deputy director and data fellow at the Center for International and Strategic Studies, points out that the main benefit of open-weight AI models is their speed of <em>diffusion<\/em>. They can spread especially easily \u201cthrough Hugging Face, GitHub, cloud providers, local deployments, and third-party inference platforms,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/what-know-about-chinese-ai-models\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/what-know-about-chinese-ai-models&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.csis.org\/analysis\/what-know-about-chinese-ai-models\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">he writes<\/a>. If you\u2019re Anthropic, and you\u2019ve built a cult around safety and charge for access to your big expensive proprietary models, you have every reason to want to regulate this.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But some Silicon Valley startups\u2014not the trillion-dollar ones like OpenAI and Anthropic\u2014really don\u2019t want the US government to put restrictions on these AI models. On Wednesday a group of over 200 startups called the Little Tech Association <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/startup-founders-urge-trump-not-to-shut-off-chinese-open-weight-ai-01008992\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/startup-founders-urge-trump-not-to-shut-off-chinese-open-weight-ai-01008992&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/22\/startup-founders-urge-trump-not-to-shut-off-chinese-open-weight-ai-01008992\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sent a letter<\/a> to Michael Kratsios, science adviser to President Donald Trump, and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick lobbying against an outright ban of open-weight AI models. The group, which includes famed startup incubator YCombinator, has argued in favor of certain safeguards but says that denying Americans access to AI models abroad would weaken US startups and create a monopoly among the AI giants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bill Gurley, the legendary tech investor and longtime partner at Benchmark Capital, has publicly argued in favor of letting \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bgurley\/status\/2079202357049790551?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/bgurley\/status\/2079202357049790551?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bgurley\/status\/2079202357049790551?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the free market work<\/a>.\u201d In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/p3institute.substack.com\/p\/from-open-source-software-to-open\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/p3institute.substack.com\/p\/from-open-source-software-to-open&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/p3institute.substack.com\/p\/from-open-source-software-to-open\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lengthy blog<\/a> that offers a nice little history of open-source software, Gurley writes that open-weight models avoid lock-in, encourage true academic research, and are critical for capital-constrained startups.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEvery AI startup, every solo developer, every two-person team building a product on top of AI infrastructure depends on having access to good models at affordable prices,\u201d Gurley says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Chamath Palihapitiya, one of the <em>All-In<\/em> podcast hosts, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chamath\/status\/2079457219892871458?s=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/chamath\/status\/2079457219892871458?s=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chamath\/status\/2079457219892871458?s=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote on X<\/a> that \u201ctricking the US Government to protect frontier labs\u2019 business model by using a China boogeyman is a mistake\u2026It is protecting the equity of 5,000 people who are investors in OAI and Ant at the sale of everyone else. Why let a foreign adversary\u2019s technology flourish in the US?
