The deal wasn\u2019t perfect and certainly made Google more money than it made the websites, but it worked for a long time. Now, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/20\/technology\/google-ai-open-web.html?unlocked_article_code=1.zVA.L7zf._L5VDoBJCS4f&amp;smid=url-share\">the deal seems to be dead<\/a>. And the web is being forced to reckon with what happens when the Google traffic dries up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">On <a href=\"https:\/\/pod.link\/vergecast\">this episode of <em>The Vergecast<\/em><\/a>, David and Nilay talk about the week\u2019s Google Zero news, including Reddit\u2019s interest in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/ai-artificial-intelligence\/969104\/reddit-might-cut-ties-with-google-as-traffic-drops\">getting out of an AI training deal<\/a>, and the publishers considering blocking Google from crawling their sites altogether. (Nilay also takes a bit of a victory lap on the whole \u201cGoogle Zero\u201d term, but only a short one.)
