{"id":446,"date":"2026-05-19T19:27:36","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=446"},"modified":"2026-05-19T19:27:36","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:27:36","slug":"kickstarter-just-killed-its-new-mature-content-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=446","title":{"rendered":"Kickstarter just killed its new mature content rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Last week, we noted Kickstarter\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/928618\/kickstarter-clutches-its-pearls\">new content guidelines<\/a>, which had some pretty weird new additions, including a prohibition on \u201csexual wellness products that are not designed for insertion or penetration and are not marketed primarily for sexual gratification.\u201d Those rules have now been eliminated and the company has restored an earlier version of its guidelines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy30 _1xwtict9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">The updates to the rules were primarily driven by requirements from our payments processor, Stripe. Stripe operates under its own legal and compliance requirements separate from Kickstarter\u2019s own rules. And even Stripe\u2019s rules are dictated by a larger system shaped by financial institutions that govern how money moves globally.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Kickstarter says that it\u2019s seen \u201ca growing number of campaigns\u201d that it approved but then got \u201csuspended by Stripe mid-funding.\u201d The company also says it\u2019s \u201cadvocated for those creators directly with Stripe,\u201d because \u201cwe believe in the work and because creators deserve to see their campaigns through.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">After the new rules were issued a week ago, we immediately asked Kickstarter for comment, followed up to get an answer, and didn\u2019t receive a full response until today \u2014 when the company pointed us toward its public post. We had asked how the company defined the distinction between \u201csexual wellness\u201d and \u201csexual gratification,\u201d and when I pushed Kickstarter today to address our original question after its revocation of the rules, here\u2019s what we got, from KS director of comms Nikki Kria:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy30 _1xwtict9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy38 _1xwtict1\">Given that we\u2019ve reverted to our previous guidelines, the specific rule you\u2019re referencing is no longer in effect. I don\u2019t want to parse language from guidelines we\u2019ve already walked back. The blog post reflects our current position and is the most accurate representation of where we stand.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cMature\u201d content has been strictly regulated by payment processors for years, so it\u2019s no surprise that Kickstarter felt compelled to comply. In fact, it <em>is<\/em> Stripe that says businesses can\u2019t sell \u201csexually explicit materials\u201d that are designed for the purpose of \u201csexual gratification.\u201d Kickstarter\u2019s blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/support.stripe.com\/questions\/prohibited-and-restricted-businesses-list-faqs?ref=updates.kickstarter.com#:~:text=share%20full%20details.-,Adult%20content,-Adult%20content%20is\">points to those rules<\/a> as an explanation for its own now-rescinded rules and insists that the recent update doesn\u2019t represent its values \u2014 including the \u201cf*ck the establishment spirit of Kickstarter.\u201d (But perhaps the establishment is still too strong to say the word \u201cfuck\u201d uncensored.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Kickstarter says its community let it know \u201cloud and clear\u201d that the new rules were wrong and that it\u2019s \u201cgoing back to the drawing board.\u201d It also says it\u2019s \u201ccontinuing to push Stripe for flexibility, clarity, and consistency.\u201d We\u2019ll have to wait and see whether a platform that\u2019s helped fund creators with billions of dollars can stand tall against the ones moving the money.
