Just ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/google\/\" class=\"text link\">Google<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the weekend, people were surprised to discover that some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/anthropic\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/claude\/\" class=\"text link\">Claude<\/a> chats could be easily found via web search. The issue, which appears to have been first flagged by a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ClaudeAI\/comments\/1v6fiyj\/you_can_view_a_lot_of_shared_conversations_via\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ClaudeAI\/comments\/1v6fiyj\/you_can_view_a_lot_of_shared_conversations_via\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/ClaudeAI\/comments\/1v6fiyj\/you_can_view_a_lot_of_shared_conversations_via\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">redditor<\/a>, exposed chats that included people asking for advice about what political party they should join, whether attorneys in Kansas are required to self-report when they believe they\u2019ve committed an ethical violation, and erotic role play.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Claude <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/support.claude.com\/en\/articles\/10593882-share-and-unshare-chats\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/support.claude.com\/en\/articles\/10593882-share-and-unshare-chats&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/support.claude.com\/en\/articles\/10593882-share-and-unshare-chats\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allows<\/a> users to share with other people \u201csnapshots\u201d of chats by creating a public URL to a specific chatbot thread. The reasons some of these URLs were indexed by major search engines comes down to the basic functions of websites, search engines, and the collision of the two when generative AI gets in the mix.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Basically, Anthropic instructs web crawlers, like those used by search engines like Google and Bing, not to index chats a user decides to share with other people. The company does this via something called a robots.txt file, which has long been considered the standard way to tell web scrapers what parts of a site are appropriate to access. Anthropic\u2019s robots.txt has made \u201cshared\u201d chats off limits to web scrapers since at least September 2025, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20250901063709\/https:\/\/claude.ai\/robots.txt\" class=\"text link\">snapshot<\/a> on the Wayback Machine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But it\u2019s harder to prevent pages from being included in search engine results than you might expect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bing, which still shows \u201cabout 612 results\u201d if you search \u201csite:<a data-offer-url=\"http:\/\/claude.ai\/share\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/claude.ai\/share&quot;}\" href=\"http:\/\/claude.ai\/share\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claude.ai\/share<\/a>\u201d at the time of this writing, says in its technical documentation that developers can <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/?topicid=cb7c31ec\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/?topicid=cb7c31ec&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/?topicid=cb7c31ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">block<\/a> the search engine\u2019s web crawlers using robots.txt\u2014but that web developers should also <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/robots-meta-tags-and-attributes-that-bing-supports-5198d240?topicid=cb7c31ec\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/robots-meta-tags-and-attributes-that-bing-supports-5198d240?topicid=cb7c31ec&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/webmasters\/help\/robots-meta-tags-and-attributes-that-bing-supports-5198d240?topicid=cb7c31ec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">include<\/a> a \u201cnoindex\u201d tag on individual pages as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Some of the chats that showed up in search results flagged in the Reddit post were deleted by the time WIRED viewed them, and results no longer show up in Google when you search the \u201cshare\u201d query that still worked on Bing. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/search\/docs\/crawling-indexing\/robots\/intro\" class=\"text link\">developer guide<\/a>, Google says that it ignores robots.txt instructions if that page is linked to from elsewhere on the internet and the page owner doesn\u2019t also include a special \u201cnoindex\u201d html tag on the page or a \u201cx-robots-tag\u201d in the page\u2019s response header.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED reviewed a sample of the exposed Claude chat pages and found that they did not include the \u201cnoindex\u201d tag that both Bing and Google say they take into consideration when deciding whether or not to index a page.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Microsoft, which owns Bing, did not provide comment ahead of publication. Anthropic did not respond to multiple requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Google spokesperson Ned Adriance tells WIRED that the indexing of shared Claude chats is Anthropic\u2019s responsibility. \u201cNeither Google nor any other search engine controls what pages are made public on the web, and these pages were indexed across many search engines,\u201d<br \/>Adriance says. \u201cWe give site owners <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7489871\" class=\"text link\">clear controls<\/a> to decide whether pages can be crawled or indexed, and we always respect those directives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic didn\u2019t respond to questions about why it didn\u2019t include the \u201cnoindex\u201d tag on the shared chat pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Last September, Anthropic got heat for the same issue, and told <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/iainmartin\/2025\/09\/08\/hundreds-of-anthropic-chatbot-transcripts-showed-up-in-google-search\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/iainmartin\/2025\/09\/08\/hundreds-of-anthropic-chatbot-transcripts-showed-up-in-google-search\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/iainmartin\/2025\/09\/08\/hundreds-of-anthropic-chatbot-transcripts-showed-up-in-google-search\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Forbes<\/a> that it uses robots.txt to let crawlers know they shouldn\u2019t access the shared chats. But as the Forbes report points out, there\u2019s no guarantee that will stop search engines from indexing specific web pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Even if robots.txt doesn\u2019t always work to prevent pages from being indexed on search engines, AI labs are still making use of it for other purposes. Many labs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-to-stop-your-data-from-being-used-to-train-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">promise creators<\/a> that their websites won\u2019t be used as AI training fodder so long as the developers make sure to \u201cdisallow\u201d certain crawlers in their robots.txt files, and the labs themselves take that advice as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/private-claude-chats-exposed-in-google-and-bing-search-results\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What happens between you and an AI chatbot does not always stay between you and a chatbot.
