In an emailed statement to <em>The Verge<\/em>, Apple spokesperson Brian Bumbery says, \u201cThere will be no restricted mode and\/or there will be no limitations put on device functionality due to missed payments or default with the Apple Upgrade program.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">This confirmation <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5mac.com\/2026\/07\/21\/ios-27-code-suggests-apple-could-restrict-leased-devices-after-missed-payments\/\">comes after <em>9to5Mac<\/em><\/a> uncovered code in an iOS 27 beta for a new \u201cApp Managed Features\u201d system. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/969596\/apple-restricted-mode-ios-27\">would reportedly allow<\/a> financial partners to \u201cperform ongoing status checks\u201d on a device, as well as have Apple\u2019s system services put a device in \u201cRestricted Mode\u201d if its owner isn\u2019t in good financial standing. As noted by <em>9to5Mac<\/em>, Restricted Mode would prevent users from accessing most apps on their phone, except for basic ones like Phone, the App Store, Clock, Settings, and Wallet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Apple is partnering with the buy now, pay later service Klarna to launch its Upgrade program, allowing customers to lease a new iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch for a flat monthly price with no interest fees.
