Nonprofits Are Ready for Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A decade ago,<\/span> Ryan Carrier was a failed hedge fund manager watching as AI systems began to spin out of control. Facebook\u2019s algorithms <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/11\/facebook-won-trump-election-not-just-fake-news\/\" class=\"text link\">shook US elections<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/03\/fault-microsofts-teen-ai-turned-jerk\/\" class=\"text link\">Microsoft chatbot<\/a> said the Holocaust was \u201cmade up,\u201d and Tesla\u2019s Autopilot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-ntsb-autopilot-crash-death\/\" class=\"text link\">killed its first driver<\/a>. \u201cThere was no governance, oversight, or accountability,\u201d Carrier says. To him, the AI-filled future awaiting his children looked bleak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Carrier went on that year to found ForHumanity, a nonprofit organization developing tools for auditing AI systems. It&#8217;s raised just hundreds of thousands of dollars since 2016, and is still a minor player in the industry. But that could soon change, because ForHumanity is now among the many nonprofits around the world trying to rein in AI, get animals out of cages, eliminate poverty and sickness, or spread democracy, that are all eager to claim a slice of what\u2019s widely anticipated to be the largest wave of philanthropy in decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Two nearly trillion-dollar AI companies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-confidentially-files-for-ipo\/\" class=\"text link\">ChatGPT developer OpenAI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-files-s1-ipo-sec\/\" class=\"text link\">Claude creator Anthropic<\/a>, are expected to go public soon, making hundreds of current and former employees ultrawealthy. Some of them are aligned with a philosophy known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/will-macaskill-longtermism\/\" class=\"text link\">effective altruism<\/a> that encourages making impactful donations sooner rather than later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Anthropic\u2019s seven founders <a data-offer-url=\"http:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/the-adolescence-of-technology\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;http:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/the-adolescence-of-technology&quot;}\" href=\"http:\/\/darioamodei.com\/essay\/the-adolescence-of-technology\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">have pledged to donate<\/a> 80 percent of their wealth, and the company has agreed to chip in one or three shares for every one its employees commit to giving, depending on when they joined and up to a certain limit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rough estimates by a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/nanransohoff.substack.com\/p\/the-third-wave-of-american-philanthropy\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/nanransohoff.substack.com\/p\/the-third-wave-of-american-philanthropy&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/nanransohoff.substack.com\/p\/the-third-wave-of-american-philanthropy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tech industry insider<\/a> suggest that Anthropic\u2019s IPO, which could happen in September, may result in $15 billion a year in additional philanthropic giving alone. That would be enough to boost total US giving by about 2.5 percent annually\u2014the same as adding four Bill Gates\u2019s, one of the world\u2019s biggest donors. Anthropic declined to comment on the total amount its employees have set aside to donate and the organizations that may benefit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">All that money is far from guaranteed. The IPOs may get delayed or go poorly and leave employees clinging onto their wealth. Industry observers are also concerned that a paralyzing number of charitable options and natural fickleness could prompt workers to keep more for themselves than anticipated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But competition for would-be donors\u2019 attention is already fierce. Jack Lewars, a consultant who advised 13 ultrarich tech and finance workers on their charitable giving last year, says he\u2019s heard that employees at the AI labs are receiving as many as 20 unsolicited emails a week from groups seeking donations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">WIRED spoke with 18 nonprofits and approached dozens more to ask how they\u2019re preparing for the potential philanthropy windfall. None of them admitted to sending cold pitches\u2014a tactic that Lewars on his new blog, <em>The Funding Anthropalypse<\/em>, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/fundinganthropalypse.com\/p\/how-not-to-fundraise-from-anthropic\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/fundinganthropalypse.com\/p\/how-not-to-fundraise-from-anthropic&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/fundinganthropalypse.com\/p\/how-not-to-fundraise-from-anthropic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> \u201chas next to no chance of working.\u201d Instead, organizations say they are ramping up hiring, training, marketing, and use of automation to position themselves to attract massive sums of funding and quickly put it to use. One <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/educate\/jobs\/8041675\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/educate\/jobs\/8041675&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/job-boards.greenhouse.io\/educate\/jobs\/8041675\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">job posting<\/a> at an education nonprofit even calls out building up relationships at Anthropic specifically as a priority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEverybody\u2019s going to go after these funds,\u201d says Christine Peterson, cofounder of the grantmaking group Foresight Institute, which claims to have funding from Anthropic employees. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be a wild ride.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">The Inside Track<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Like many nonprofit leaders who spoke with WIRED, ForHumanity\u2019s Carrier says he&#8217;s focusing more on the work itself than on fundraising. But he recognizes this may be a moment to shift, and has begun wondering how to get into IPO soirees in San Francisco. \u201cI just have to get in that room,\u201d Carrier says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Bo Young Lee, CEO of the nonprofit AI4ALL, says she is attending more events, putting out more research, and asking board members, such as AI scientist and entrepreneur Fei-Fei Li, to introduce her to employees at the AI labs. Her organization trains young adults across the US to develop their own AI models, with the goal of diversifying the tech workforce.
