{"id":4574,"date":"2026-07-29T03:25:37","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T03:25:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4574"},"modified":"2026-07-29T03:25:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T03:25:37","slug":"7-oh-users-brace-for-dea-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4574","title":{"rendered":"7-OH Users Are Stockpiling Ahead of a DEA Ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">A couple months<\/span> after completing detox for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/alcohol\/\" class=\"text link\">alcohol<\/a> in June 2023, Cam got into a brutal motorcycle accident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The 36-year-old upstate New York resident woke up hospitalized in late September after a month in a coma. \u201cI broke every rib, every vertebrae. My pelvis was completely shattered,\u201d says Cam, who asked to be identified by his first name because he is discussing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/drugs\/\" class=\"text link\">drug<\/a> use. He needed a spinal fusion and was unable to return to his job in car parts manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI was in pain 24\/7,\u201d Cam says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He needed serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/opioids\/\" class=\"text link\">painkillers<\/a>, and he says the 15 milligrams of oxycodone a day he was prescribed wasn\u2019t cutting it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI didn&#8217;t sleep for months. I would literally scream in agony, like crying, screaming uncontrollably,\u201d he says. (Dosing for opioids can vary greatly depending on a person\u2019s tolerance and pain level, but 15 mg is not considered a high dose\u2014and Cam notes he used to take \u201c20 times that\u201d when he struggled with addiction in the past.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In early 2024, he says he was served an Instagram ad for a free sample of 7-hydroxymitragynine, or 7-OH\u2014a potent compound found in kratom that activates a person\u2019s opioid receptors. The pain relief was \u201cright on par\u201d with a higher dose of oxycodone, he says. While 7-OH is available in gas stations and smoke shops around the country, Cam has turned to buying it in bulk online, spending around $500 for an order that lasts him a month. It\u2019s allowed him to be more active and do chores around the house, or even go for a car ride without being in pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But all that is in jeopardy now, as the Drug Enforcement Administration plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-dea-plans-to-ban-kratom-compound-7-oh-sold-as-a-gas-station-opioid\/\" class=\"text link\">place 7-OH onto Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act<\/a>\u2014the same category as heroin\u2014along with similar compounds MGM-15 and MGM-16. The temporary ban, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2026-07-06\/pdf\/2026-13580.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2026-07-06\/pdf\/2026-13580.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.govinfo.gov\/content\/pkg\/FR-2026-07-06\/pdf\/2026-13580.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to take place August 5 at the earliest<\/a>, will be in effect for two years, with the option to extend it for an additional year as the DEA works toward permanently scheduling the substances. Already, a dozen states <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-kratom-civil-war-is-heating-up-and-maha-has-picked-a-side\/\" class=\"text link\">have banned 7-OH<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cGiven its pharmacological profile as an opioid agonist and high abuse potential, the marketing of 7-hydroxymitragynine products to consumers as botanical supplements constitute a significant public health risk,\u201d reads the DEA\u2019s notice of intent about the proposed ban. The Food and Drug Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/fda-101-dietary-supplements\" class=\"text link\">does not regulate<\/a> \u201cdietary supplements\u201d for safety and efficacy before they hit the market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Some people have gone broke after their 7-OH tolerances escalated, leading to higher doses\u2014one user tells WIRED prior to quitting, he was spending $175 every four to five days, but felt so sick he stopped working, and eventually couldn\u2019t pay rent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The DEA notes that people are using the unregulated dietary supplements to self-medicate chronic pain. Cam acknowledges he\u2019s doing just that\u2014and he\u2019s terrified of having the treatment taken away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThey&#8217;re fucking a lot of people,\u201d he says of the DEA. \u201cIt&#8217;s caused me so much anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The DEA\u2019s action comes amid a wider rift between the mainstream kratom industry, which says 7-OH should not be classified as kratom because it\u2019s much more potent, and 7-OH proponents who say the drug is helpful to many people and can\u2019t be separated from kratom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In pursuing a federal ban on manufacturing, sales, and possession, the Trump administration has sided with the kratom lobby. Health and Human Services secretary Robert F. Kennedy called the 7-OH industry \u201csinister\u201d at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DhG85Cu7JCI\" class=\"text link\">press conference last July<\/a>, claiming that the products are \u201cmarketed for children,\u201d in part because they are sometimes sold as brightly colored gummies. Department of Homeland Security secretary Markwayne Mullin has also supported a crackdown on 7-OH. As WIRED has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-kratom-civil-war-is-heating-up-and-maha-has-picked-a-side\/\" class=\"text link\">previously reported<\/a>, both Kennedy and Mullin have strong ties to the kratom industry.
