In a statement to <em>The Verge<\/em>, Xbox technology chief Scott Van Vliet says that while physical game discs are subject to licensing inspections, that shouldn\u2019t have prevented them from working during this week\u2019s outage, or while consoles are offline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking into reports that some players were unable to access games using discs as expected during the service interruption. Disc-based entitlement checks should not prevent players from accessing their games and this is by design,\u201d said Van Vliet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/971545\/xbox-outage-disc-physical-games\">massive outage<\/a> started on Sunday night, and lasted for almost a day. It prevented some console owners from playing games \u2014 both physical and digital, as confirmed by the Xbox status page \u2014 alongside logging in, launching apps, or finding games on the Xbox store. Xbox confirmed the issues had been resolved on Monday evening. In an update on X yesterday, Van Vliet blamed the outage on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/971954\/xboxs-cto-explains-mondays-big-outage\">an external licensing service<\/a>, but didn\u2019t explain why disc-based games were impacted at the time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Now, Van Vliet tells <em>The Verge<\/em> that Xbox has identified an issue that prevented some consoles \u201cfrom correctly using saved entitlements during the outage,\u201d noting that \u201cOffline mode is also designed to rely on those saved entitlements.\u201d A fix to prevent this from happening again will be rolled out in an upcoming update.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">These \u201centitlements\u201d are digital rights licenses that indicate what content a user is entitled to access. Sony is set to cease all production of physical PlayStation game discs by 2028, and Xbox is currently testing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/report\/960173\/microsoft-xbox-disc-to-digital-feature-physical-game-collection\">disc-to-digital feature<\/a> that will allow console owners to create digital copies of games they physically own.
