RAMageddon won\u2019t be the only reason your next phone costs more \u2014 Qualcomm is about to raise prices on all its processors, as well. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said on Wednesday that \u201cprices are going to go up\u201d on the company\u2019s products starting on September 1st, CNBC<\/a> reports. The price hikes were rumored<\/a> last week to be \u201ca percentage in the double digits.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Qualcomm announced the planned price increases while reporting a 20 percent year-over-year drop in revenue from its handset business, the lowest it\u2019s reported since 2021<\/a>. In its quarterly earnings presentation, Qualcomm said this drop is due to \u201cunprecedented increases in memory pricing and supply constraints,\u201d which have been driving up prices<\/a> on everything from game consoles<\/a> to laptops<\/a> and even Raspberry Pi boards<\/a>, with no sign of stopping any time soon<\/a>. But instead of profiting less as a result, the company says it\u2019ll raise its own prices to compensate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Qualcomm is also expecting an \u201cacceleration\u201d in the dip in revenue from Apple products, noting that its \u201cmodem share for the upcoming iPhone launch is expected to be materially lower.\u201d It suggested twice on the earnings call that its other businesses would make up the difference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As smartphone revenue declines, it seems Qualcomm\u2019s planning to become a tripod of handset, data center, and automotive \u2014 it said today that soon only half of its revenue will come from phones, and only one-third will be from phones by 2029, as its data center and automotive businesses ramp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

On Wednesday, Qualcomm announced a decade-long deal to supply chips for BMW<\/a>. Qualcomm EVP, CFO, and COO Akash Palkhiwala also said some OEMs are beginning to use \u201cprior generation\u201d Qualcomm chips in their devices in response to higher component costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
