In recent years, however, moms and dads are facing a fresh misery when it comes to bedtime stories: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/scammy-ai-generated-books-flooding-amazon\/\" class=\"text link\">AI-generated slop<\/a> in which their own kids are the unwitting stars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Three months ago, on an anti-artificial-intelligence subreddit, one user vented a now standard complaint: Against their wishes, their mother was attempting to create an AI children\u2019s book about her granddaughter to give the little girl on her birthday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI have reiterated countless times that I do not support AI-generated art, and drew a hard line that she is absolutely not to feed any of our photos into AI or use our identifying information in any way,\u201d the redditor <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1t5zg2p\/grandma_making_ai_picture_book_for_granddaughter\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1t5zg2p\/grandma_making_ai_picture_book_for_granddaughter\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1t5zg2p\/grandma_making_ai_picture_book_for_granddaughter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cHowever, she is creating these storylines based on experiences with my kid and modeling her characters to have similar attributes as my kid, and us[ing] our family\u2019s first names so that they represent us and my kid will \u2018see her family reflected.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If the odds are against parents who disapprove of artificial intelligence, it\u2019s because there\u2019s an entire ecosystem of AI services designed to insert real children into books\u2014platforms such as <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/imagitime.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/imagitime.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/imagitime.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Imagitime<\/a>, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.storywonderbook.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.storywonderbook.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.storywonderbook.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">StoryWonderBook<\/a>, and Childbook.ai\u2014and some relatives can\u2019t resist their ads for specially curated storybooks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A 41-year-old father of children aged 7 and 3 in the Midwest tells WIRED that both kids have received a \u201cpersonalized\u201d AI-generated book from a friend or family member. (He requested anonymity to avoid offending the gift givers.) The books themselves failed to impress, according to this dad: \u201cThey are so long and wordy that, after one time through, each of my kids was like, \u2018Yeah, OK, let\u2019s read <em>Little Blue Truck<\/em>,\u2019\u201d he says, naming a best-selling children\u2019s series by author Alice Schertle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Compared to this perennial favorite, he notes, the tykes were simply \u201cbored\u201d by what AI had to offer, even if the tale was theoretically about them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Another father, 40, in Los Angeles, says his mother-in-law has gifted his daughter and son, aged 1 and 3, respectively, a total of four slop books, including a pair of Mother\u2019s Day\u2013themed stories that are \u201cexactly the same\u201d apart from which kid is featured. He requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter within his family, since his wife \u201cdoesn\u2019t want to raise the issue\u201d with her mother. Still, he considers it \u201cmorally reprehensible\u201d to feed kids\u2019 likenesses into \u201cslop machines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Daozhi Xu, a fellow in the School of Humanities at Macquarie University who has published an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/lighthouse.mq.edu.au\/article\/2026\/may-2026\/ai-and-children-books\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/lighthouse.mq.edu.au\/article\/2026\/may-2026\/ai-and-children-books&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/lighthouse.mq.edu.au\/article\/2026\/may-2026\/ai-and-children-books\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a> of \u201cthe AI children\u2019s book boom,\u201d says that this kind of personalization doesn\u2019t guarantee engagement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cChildren do not love a storybook simply because their name or image appears in the story; they love the book because the story itself is interesting,\u201d Xu explains via email\u2014it\u2019s the \u201ccharacters, plots, and imaginative worlds\u201d that matter. \u201cCompared with human-authored books,\u201d Xu adds, the AI-generated versions \u201coften lack humor, memorable characters, and dramatic tension.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The AI-fueled explosion of junk children\u2019s books comes as about <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nagb.gov\/news-and-events\/news-releases\/2025\/nations-report-card-decline-in-reading-progress-in-math.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nagb.gov\/news-and-events\/news-releases\/2025\/nations-report-card-decline-in-reading-progress-in-math.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nagb.gov\/news-and-events\/news-releases\/2025\/nations-report-card-decline-in-reading-progress-in-math.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">40 percent<\/a> of fourth-graders in the US are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mississippi-state-testing-reading-comprehension-literacy\/\" class=\"text link\">reading below the \u201cbasic\u201d standard<\/a> set by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, according to a report published in January 2025. Meanwhile, there are alarming signs that parents are doing less to foster their kids\u2019 love of reading at home.
