{"id":4682,"date":"2026-07-30T14:35:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T14:35:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4682"},"modified":"2026-07-30T14:35:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T14:35:27","slug":"doge-veterans-are-landing-big-jobs-at-prediction-markets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4682","title":{"rendered":"DOGE Veterans Are Landing Big Jobs at Prediction Markets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Polymarket\u2019s every move<\/span> is under close <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/whats-up-with-polymarkets-panama-entity\/\" class=\"text link\">scrutiny<\/a> these days as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/prediction-markets\/\" class=\"text link\">prediction market<\/a> giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-political-war-over-prediction-markets-is-just-getting-started\/\" class=\"text link\">fights dozens<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/judge-blocks-minnesota-implementing-novel-prediction-markets-ban-2026-07-27\/\" class=\"text link\">legal battles<\/a> about how it can operate. But one hiring decision has remained under the radar: Late last year, Polymarket brought on former Department of Government Efficiency affiliate Jonathan Mendelson as a senior strategic executive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Before his stint at Elon Musk\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/doge\/\" class=\"text link\">DOGE<\/a>, Mendelson worked as an investor for the venture capital firm Accel, which invests in technology companies, in San Francisco. At DOGE, Mendelson was technically employed by the General Services Administration but worked as an adviser to Securities and Exchange Commission chairman Paul Atkins. Mendelson was there for less than a year. Polymarket, which currently faces an investigation from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/polymarket-insider-trading-cftc-michael-selig-interview\/\" class=\"text link\">Commodity Futures Trading Commission<\/a>, declined to comment for this story. The SEC did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mendelson isn\u2019t the only former DOGE affiliate in a position of power in a prediction market. Elie Mishory, a former CFTC regulator who helped develop the agency\u2019s framework for prediction markets, worked as Kalshi\u2019s general counsel and chief regulatory officer in 2025 before stepping down to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-02\/kalshi-s-top-lawyer-quits-to-become-leader-of-doge-team-at-sec\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-02\/kalshi-s-top-lawyer-quits-to-become-leader-of-doge-team-at-sec&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-02\/kalshi-s-top-lawyer-quits-to-become-leader-of-doge-team-at-sec\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lead DOGE\u2019s efforts<\/a> at the SEC, where he worked with Mendelson. In June, he took a role as the chief regulatory and legal affairs officer at Novig, a newer, well-funded sports-focused prediction market. \u201cElie has been at the center of the most consequential regulatory developments in prediction markets\u2014he helped bring them from a fringe idea to the center of the national conversation,\u201d Jacob Fortinsky, Novig\u2019s cofounder and chief executive, said in a statement announcing his hire.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mishory tells WIRED that joining a prediction market company was a \u201cnatural dovetail\u201d from his mission at the SEC for DOGE. There, he says he prioritized talking to staffers about how to streamline operations, and then tried to implement their suggestions on how to change administrative processes or get rid of redundant software. He was quick to note that his experience at DOGE was \u201catypical,\u201d in part because he didn\u2019t focus on cutting staff. (The SEC did <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-26-107813\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-26-107813&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/gao-26-107813\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lose 18 percent<\/a> of its staff in 2025; unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-trumps-aid-cuts-are-fueling-the-ebola-outbreak\/\" class=\"text link\">DOGE-ravaged<\/a> agencies like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/doge-guts-usaid-workforce\/\" class=\"text link\">United States Agency for International Development<\/a>, most of the cuts were voluntary buyouts.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cMy version of DOGE was to find the people who were the experts,\u201d he says. \u201cThe people who actually used the software, not just the people who would buy the software, to give them a voice.\u201d In Mishory\u2019s eyes, this resembles the way that prediction markets \u201cdemocratize\u201d knowledge by rewarding people according to how well they perform. He also sees overlap in the appetite for risk in both DOGE and in prediction markets. Indeed, the way that DOGE brought on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/elon-musk-government-young-engineers\/\" class=\"text link\">young, inexperienced engineers<\/a> to remake the federal government mirrors how many of the big prediction market companies, including Polymarket and Novig, are steered by twentysomethings with thin r\u00e9sum\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">These hires have been made at a tumultuous, politically charged moment for the industry. As prediction markets have exploded in popularity, many state regulators and federal lawmakers are calling for stricter guardrails on how they operate, arguing that they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-this-was-the-wildest-week-for-prediction-markets-yet\/\" class=\"text link\">facilitate corruption<\/a> and violate state gambling laws.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In many ways, the industry represents the zenith of the strain of startup culture that valorizes speed in a quest to remake institutions, while regulators struggle to keep up. Although many detractors say prediction markets\u2019 offerings are sports betting products in disguise, the leaders of these companies aim to compete with the world\u2019s largest commodities and futures markets.
