{"id":4684,"date":"2026-07-30T15:13:46","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:13:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4684"},"modified":"2026-07-30T15:13:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T15:13:46","slug":"google-gemini-can-control-humanoid-robots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4684","title":{"rendered":"Gemini Robotics 2 Brings Google&#8217;s AI Into the Physical World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Google DeepMind just<\/span> released a new version of its artificial intelligence model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/google-gemini\/\" class=\"text link\">Gemini<\/a>, and it can control a range of different robots\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nvidia-unitree-humanoid-robot-h2-plus\/\" class=\"text link\">humanoids<\/a> capable of dextrous tasks like screwing in lightbulbs and tying trash bags.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Gemini Robotics 2 combines several different AI models into a single system. Taken together, they allow a robot to make sense of its surroundings and how to act in it. A vision language model (VLM), which understands images and video, can communicate with humans and reason how to perform different tasks. Two vision language action (VLA) models, trained to understand how to move in physical space, control the robot\u2019s full-body movement as well as the movements of grippers or hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In video demonstrations shared ahead of the release, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/deepmind\/\" class=\"text link\">the company<\/a> showed several different robots performing complex tasks autonomously using the amalgamated model. In one demo, Apptronik\u2019s Apollo 2 robot used hands from a company called Sharpa to tidy shelves. Google DeepMind trained the model to perform these tasks using a mix of human teleoperation, video examples, and simulations\u2014it\u2019s not yet possible for AI models to perform a wide range of complex tasks without specific training.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Although <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/anthropic\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/openai\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> have taken a lead with chatbots and AI coding tools, Google has a stronger track record in robotics research, and has <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/say-can.github.io\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/say-can.github.io\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/say-can.github.io\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> important <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/sites.research.google\/palm-saycan\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/sites.research.google\/palm-saycan&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.research.google\/palm-saycan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">work<\/a> on using AI to train robots to do useful things. The release is another sign that the search giant is betting AI will need to break free from the digital realm to realize its full potential. (It previously partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-boston-dynamics-gemini-powered-robot-atlas\/\" class=\"text link\">Boston Dynamics<\/a>, a leader in legged robots, to provide the brains for those machines.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt&#8217;s another milestone in our path towards really getting towards what we call like physical AGI, which means we get a robot to do anything that a human can,\u201d Carolina Parada, head of robotics at Google DeepMind, tells WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Giving frontier AI models access to robots so that they can wander around workplaces or homes and manipulate objects does, however, come with risks. Previous research has shown that using frontier AI to control robots can produce unexpected and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/researchers-llm-ai-robot-violence\/\" class=\"text link\">sometimes dangerous behavior<\/a>. And the idea that these models can take sudden or unwanted actions in the digital realm became apparent recently, when an unreleased AI agent developed by OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openais-rogue-ai-agent-hacked-more-than-just-hugging-face\/\" class=\"text link\">hacked<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-models-escaped-containment-and-hacked-huggingface\/\" class=\"text link\">several systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe safety question is even more pressing because you&#8217;re putting them in a lot of other situations,\u201d Parada says. \u201cThere&#8217;s a lot of uncertainty that will show up, and so you want to be able to understand the safety question more deeply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Parada says Google takes a multi-layered approach to safety, with guardrails applied on each model layer. It\u2019s also introducing ASIMOV-Agentic, a new benchmark for measuring the safety of various AI systems collaborating to control a robot.
