{"id":4700,"date":"2026-07-30T19:41:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T19:41:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4700"},"modified":"2026-07-30T19:41:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T19:41:29","slug":"zoox-becomes-the-first-steering-wheel-free-robotaxi-to-charge-for-rides-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4700","title":{"rendered":"For the First Time, Zoox Can Charge People for Rides in Its Steering-Wheel-Free Robotaxis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Vehicles purpose-built to<\/span> drive without human help received the first-ever approval in the US to pick up paid customers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company, Amazon subsidiary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/here-come-the-robotaxis-zoox-lyft-may-mobility\/\" class=\"text link\">Zoox<\/a>, says it will soon begin to charge for rides in Las Vegas, where it\u2019s been carrying passengers for free since last year. The company is also currently picking up a limited set of passengers in Austin, Miami, and San Francisco, all for free.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The approval is a milestone for the autonomous vehicle industry. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/waymo\/\" class=\"text link\">Waymo<\/a>, the nation\u2019s leading robotaxi provider, uses vehicles that still meet government design standards\u2014with steering wheels, pedals, and mirrors, and conventional seating arrangements. (Even the company\u2019s new, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/here-comes-ojai-waymos-new-chinese-made-robotaxi\/\" class=\"text link\">purpose-built robotaxi<\/a> has those legally mandated features.) But some industry players argue that driverless tech can only reach its potential with vehicles built to be driven by computers\u2014ones that don\u2019t meet federal vehicle safety standards written for older technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That has proven a difficult path. Zoox has worked for more than a decade to design, manufacture, and receive government approvals for its vehicles, which don\u2019t have steering wheels or pedals and feature a \u201ccampfire-style\u201d seating arrangement where riders face each other while riding.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The NHTSA\u2019s two-year exemption from its safety standards will allow Zoox to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis. The company will, in turn, be subject to more stringent government oversight and will submit extra data on crashes and unexplained stops. The NHTSA can retract Zoox\u2019s exemption if it finds that it\u2019s not operating safely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a speech at an industry conference in San Diego on Thursday, NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said Zoox had proved that it exceeded the safety standards applied to traditional cars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis technology needs to be developed appropriately, safely and responsibly,\u201d Morrison said to an audience of industry insiders and policy experts. \u201cIf we see an unreasonable risk to safety, you&#8217;re going to hear from us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Earlier this month, Morrison published <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/self-driving-cars-are-interfering-with-first-responders-feds-arent-happy\/\" class=\"text link\">an unusual open letter<\/a> drawing attention to what he called a \u201cclear pattern\u201d of autonomous vehicles <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/emergency-first-responders-say-waymos-are-getting-worse\/\" class=\"text link\">interfering with the work of emergency responders<\/a>. \u201cTo state it bluntly: An AV that cannot safely interact with first responders is a danger to the general public,\u201d he wrote then, and directed companies to focus their resources on fixing the issue. Morrison said the NHTSA would meet with several companies on their solutions to this emergency response interference issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/tesla\/\" class=\"text link\">Tesla<\/a> says it started testing its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-cybercab-is-here\/\" class=\"text link\">steering wheel-free Cybercab<\/a> late last month, but hasn\u2019t outlined how it might receive government approval for those vehicles. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-reveals-new-details-about-robotaxi-crashes-and-the-humans-involved\/\" class=\"text link\">limited robotaxi service<\/a> currently uses modified <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/it-looks-like-the-tesla-model-y-refresh-has-bombed\/\" class=\"text link\">Model Y<\/a>\u2019s with steering wheels and pedals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Zoox says that even before official approval to carry customers, it has autonomously transported more than 500,000 riders more than three million miles. The company issued a voluntary recall on its software earlier this month after it found that its cars might not properly detect smoke, and could get in the way in emergencies.
