As I sat in federal court, certain I was about to lose my freedom, the doors suddenly opened. My 9-year-old son walked in carrying an old blue backpack, looked straight at the judge, and said, \u201cYour Honor. I know who framed my mom. They\u2019re sitting in this room.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">So begins a thread on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/x\" class=\"text link\">X<\/a> that appeared in my feed one day. I knew that the first-person narrator probably didn\u2019t exist, and following this thread would draw me into a mawkish tale where good triumphs over evil. Indeed, the author is not a mother on trial for theft, but a self-identified 21-year-old stock trader in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/nigeria\/\" class=\"text link\">Nigeria<\/a>, who uses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\/\" class=\"text link\">AI to generate<\/a> stories\u2014and gets paid for it by X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">I found this out when I began wondering about the proliferation of these compact melodramas of redemption in my feed. It\u2019s probably my own fault; I sometimes idly click on these cheesy stories\u2014you know, just to see what happens next\u2014and the algorithm took notice. In this case, the author is one of countless beneficiaries of X\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/help.x.com\/en\/using-x\/creator-revenue-sharing\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/help.x.com\/en\/using-x\/creator-revenue-sharing&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/help.x.com\/en\/using-x\/creator-revenue-sharing\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Creative Revenue Sharing<\/a> program, which pays for posts that boost engagement on the platform. To join, a creator must become a Premium X user, have at least 500 verified followers, and have drawn a minimum of 5 million impressions in the last three-month period. The <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/premium\/status\/1855026854681624761?lang=en\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/premium\/status\/1855026854681624761?lang=en&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/premium\/status\/1855026854681624761?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stated goal<\/a> is to encourage \u201cauthentic, high-quality content,\u201d and some of the money surely goes to creators doing just that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But paying for posts that go viral makes the program ripe for exploitation. Some creators in the program engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c4gp555xy5ro\" class=\"text link\">\u201crage baiting,\u201d<\/a> using outrageous content to draw comments and views. In May 2025, X <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/transparency.x.com\/assets\/legal\/x-corp-v-do-minh-thang.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/transparency.x.com\/assets\/legal\/x-corp-v-do-minh-thang.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/transparency.x.com\/assets\/legal\/x-corp-v-do-minh-thang.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sued 8 Vietnamese creators<\/a> and 25 \u201cJohn Does,\u201d alleging that they fraudulently drew money from the program by posting phony AI-generated content and then boosting engagement by bot-driven comments. In April, X moved to cut the payments of \u201caggregators\u201d who primarily posted news from other sources, and threatened sanctions against those who overused the BREAKING tag to draw eyeballs. On July 16 of this year, X revealed that it had removed millions of posts that purloined already-published content posted by others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">It\u2019s not clear how X regards the AI-generated story slop that has infected my feed. (The company, now part of xAI\u2014which is itself now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/spacex-acquires-xai-elon-musk\/\" class=\"text link\">part of SpaceX<\/a>\u2014would not answer my questions about this.) Most of the stories are falsely presented as true first-person narratives, though it\u2019s pretty obvious that they are fabricated. In many cases, the creators describe themselves in their profile as storytellers. It\u2019s hard to prove that the actual authors are AI models, but the vast majority bear the signs. The posts are manipulative and dumb and anything but authentic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rob Cover, a professor at Australia&#8217;s RMIT Digital Ethnography Research Centre who <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/14614448251400675\" class=\"text link\">studies AI-generated conten<\/a>t, broke down the structure of these posts for me in an email. It\u2019s as formalized as a sonnet. First comes a rage-baiting setup, \u201cin which an innocent person is wrongfully fired, evicted, scammed, loses their rightful place on public transport, or is the subject of judicial overreach.\u201d This is followed by a turnaround: \u201cThe underdog is redeemed while the adversary is defeated, humiliated, and shamed (often as a representation of a public shaming),\u201d says Cover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In many of these tales, narrators are in possession of sealed documents that turn the table on tormentors, often in divorce disputes or the execution of a relative\u2019s estate.
