{"id":4844,"date":"2026-08-02T14:09:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:09:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4844"},"modified":"2026-08-02T14:09:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T14:09:04","slug":"is-it-possible-to-make-privacy-friendly-smart-glasses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=4844","title":{"rendered":"Is It Possible to Make Smart Glasses That Aren\u2019t Creepy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Face computers are<\/span> on the upswing, as companies, massive and tiny, are all vying for nuggets in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">smart-glasses<\/a> gold rush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That also means the industry is garnering its fair share of criticism, mostly focusing on the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-rise-of-the-ray-ban-meta-creep\/\" class=\"text link\">creeps<\/a> can abuse camera-equipped smart glasses to capture photos and videos of people without their knowledge or consent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The prime target for such criticism is the biggest company in the space, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/meta\/\" class=\"text link\">Meta<\/a>. The company\u2019s smart glasses can capture images, audio, and video of whatever and whoever the wearer is looking at. That alone is enough to alarm anyone concerned about protecting their privacy. Meta\u2019s smart glasses do have an indicator light to warn bystanders when they\u2019re being recorded, though some Meta users have figured out how to bypass those safety features and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tiktok-promotes-stickers-for-secretly-recording-meta-ray-ban-video\/\" class=\"text link\">disable the lights<\/a>. More recently, the company has added anti-tamper features that disable the glasses if a user has meddled with them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Other concerns about the glasses have continued to mount. Earlier this year, Meta programmed a feature that, if enabled, would add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-smart-glasses-face-recognition-nametag-connections\/\" class=\"text link\">face-recognition technology<\/a> to its smart glasses. After a WIRED report exposed this feature, Meta then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-removes-face-recognition-code-meta-ai-app-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">deleted the code<\/a> from its app. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/heres-the-truth-about-whether-metas-nametag-face-recognition-exists\/\" class=\"text link\">verified the existence of the feature<\/a>, called Name Tag, on The Atlantic\u2019s podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VmQl7TswfLM&amp;t=447s\" class=\"text link\"><em>The Most Interesting Thing in AI<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">(At an event in June, Meta also said it&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-new-smart-glasses-are-cheaper-colorful-and-meta-branded\/\" class=\"text link\">considering<\/a> adding camera-free smart glasses to its lineup.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This conversation around privacy and smart glasses is only going to grow as other big tech companies\u2014notably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/hands-on-with-all-of-google-new-upcoming-android-xr-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">Google and Samsung<\/a>\u2014enter the space later this year. Apple is also reportedly working on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-vision-pro-was-an-expensive-misstep-now-apple-has-to-catch-up-with-smart-glasses\/\" class=\"text link\">smart glasses<\/a> that could arrive in 2027, though it has <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/apple-delays-smart-glasses-launch-over-privacy-issues-report-says\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/apple-delays-smart-glasses-launch-over-privacy-issues-report-says\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/tech\/services-and-software\/apple-delays-smart-glasses-launch-over-privacy-issues-report-says\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly delayed production<\/a> to address the privacy issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As invasive as the technology can feel, lots of people really do want and like their smart glasses. Meta has sold <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/counterpointresearch.com\/en\/insights\/Global-Smart-Glasses-Shipments-Grew-139-Percent-YoY-in-H2-2025\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/counterpointresearch.com\/en\/insights\/Global-Smart-Glasses-Shipments-Grew-139-Percent-YoY-in-H2-2025&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/counterpointresearch.com\/en\/insights\/Global-Smart-Glasses-Shipments-Grew-139-Percent-YoY-in-H2-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tens of millions<\/a> of units, and despite impassioned debates about privacy among tech watchdogs and the general public, the company\u2019s glasses are selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cj37z8357e5o\" class=\"text link\">better than ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">People have found genuinely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-ray-ban-meta-wayfarers-are-the-best-face-computer\/\" class=\"text link\">useful reasons<\/a> to wear the glasses, whether it\u2019s quickly snapping a picture or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-gopro-hero-camera\/\" class=\"text link\">GoPro-style<\/a> video of a sick mountain bike run. There are also accessibility use cases that artificial intelligence can help with, like real-time captioning of spoken conversations and Meta\u2019s partnership with <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bemyeyes.com\/be-my-eyes-smartglasses\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bemyeyes.com\/be-my-eyes-smartglasses\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bemyeyes.com\/be-my-eyes-smartglasses\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Be My Eyes<\/a>, which helps visually impaired people interact with the world around them by activating the glasses\u2019 camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Smaller brands have tried to appeal to the anti-Meta crowd with privacy-focused smart glasses. Even Realities, for example, makes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/even-realities-g2\/\" class=\"text link\">smart glasses<\/a> without cameras in a deliberate attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/even-realities-even-g2-smart-glasses-and-even-r1-smart-ring\/\" class=\"text link\">differentiate<\/a> from Meta\u2019s offerings.
