With access to less funding and fewer compute resources than OpenAI and Anthropic, the French AI lab has lagged behind its American rivals in model performance. But recent turmoil stateside has created a window of opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In June, the Trump administration placed restrictions on the distribution of models from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.me\/story\/the-trump-administration-is-lifting-its-export-controls-on-anthropics-mythos-and-fable-ai-models\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-gpt-56-model-release-trump-admin-approval\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a>, giving Europe a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/europe-is-fed-up-and-wants-its-own-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">glimpse of an unwelcome future<\/a> in which its access to bleeding-edge AI could be suddenly revoked. A few weeks later, one of OpenAI\u2019s models <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openais-rogue-ai-agent-hacked-more-than-just-hugging-face\/\" class=\"text link\">broke loose from a testing sandbox<\/a> and hacked multiple companies; Anthropic then revealed that its models had engaged in similar behavior. The incidents <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/pdf\/Open-Weights-and-American-AI-Leadership.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/pdf\/Open-Weights-and-American-AI-Leadership.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/images.nvidia.com\/pdf\/Open-Weights-and-American-AI-Leadership.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">revived a long-running debate<\/a> over safety risks tied to proprietary, closed-weight models, whose inner-workings are a closely guarded secret.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mistral frames itself as the antidote: a Europe-based alternative to the American labs, whose models\u2014most of which are published under an open source license for anybody to use\u2014cannot escape scrutiny or be switched off unilaterally.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t end up in a situation where most people are building open source, you\u2019re giving way too much power to companies that are going to become statelike\u2014that will behave in a very aggressive way to make sure that nobody can compete,\u201d Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch told a packed room at an AI conference in Paris last month. \u201cThe alternative to open source winning is actually a pretty dark world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mensch\u2019s argument is self-serving but effective. Last September, Mistral <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mistral.ai\/news\/mistral-ai-raises-1-7-b-to-accelerate-technological-progress-with-ai\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mistral.ai\/news\/mistral-ai-raises-1-7-b-to-accelerate-technological-progress-with-ai\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mistral.ai\/news\/mistral-ai-raises-1-7-b-to-accelerate-technological-progress-with-ai\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">raised<\/a> almost $2 billion at a $13.5 billion valuation; it&#8217;s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-12\/france-s-mistral-in-funding-talks-at-about-20-billion-valuation\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-12\/france-s-mistral-in-funding-talks-at-about-20-billion-valuation&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-12\/france-s-mistral-in-funding-talks-at-about-20-billion-valuation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reportedly<\/a> teeing up another raise that will bump that figure to $23 billion. The lab\u2019s revenue has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/664249e7-e8d5-4425-b397-ad3ed590b305\" class=\"text link\">reportedly<\/a> increased 20-fold in the past year, helped along by deals with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/frances-armed-forces-ministry-awards-mistral-ai-framework-agreement-2026-01-08\/\" class=\"text link\">French government<\/a>, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/2026\/07\/21\/microsoft-and-mistral-expand-strategic-partnership-to-give-enterprises-and-regulated-industries-frontier-ai-they-can-control\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/2026\/07\/21\/microsoft-and-mistral-expand-strategic-partnership-to-give-enterprises-and-regulated-industries-frontier-ai-they-can-control\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/2026\/07\/21\/microsoft-and-mistral-expand-strategic-partnership-to-give-enterprises-and-regulated-industries-frontier-ai-they-can-control\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft<\/a>, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.hsbc.com\/news-and-views\/news\/media-releases\/2025\/hsbc-and-mistral-ai-join-forces-to-accelerate-ai-adoption-across-global-bank\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.hsbc.com\/news-and-views\/news\/media-releases\/2025\/hsbc-and-mistral-ai-join-forces-to-accelerate-ai-adoption-across-global-bank&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hsbc.com\/news-and-views\/news\/media-releases\/2025\/hsbc-and-mistral-ai-join-forces-to-accelerate-ai-adoption-across-global-bank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HSBC<\/a>, and others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe continental strategy of the EU to become more technologically sovereign \u2026 and the increased hostility of the US is a magic formula that all of a sudden puts Mistral\u2014whose performance has not been spectacular\u2014in a favorable position,\u201d says Andrea Renda, director of research at the Centre for European Policy Studies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Mistral has long believed the AI market would be too large to be controlled by any single country without causing geopolitical instability, Mensch says. \u201cIt\u2019s comparable to energy\u2014electricity,\u201d he told WIRED in an interview after the conference. \u201cYou want to make sure that you have security of supply, diverse ways of sourcing the technology, so that nobody can turn you off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That case has become easier to make since the US government, with the return of Donald Trump to the White House, began to demonstrate a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-us-rule-aims-to-block-chinas-access-to-ai-chips-and-models-by-restricting-the-world\/\" class=\"text link\">willingness to leverage its domestic capabilities<\/a> against trading partners. \u201cMore and more, AI is understood as a major vector of power,\u201d Mensch told WIRED. \u201cThe new administration makes everything a little more emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The recent <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/07\/chinese-ai-models-costs-us-openai-anthropic.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/07\/chinese-ai-models-costs-us-openai-anthropic.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/07\/chinese-ai-models-costs-us-openai-anthropic.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">surge in the adoption<\/a> of open-weight models is part of that picture. One of few ways that European businesses can guarantee undisrupted access to AI, Mensch argues, is to run open-weight models on domestic infrastructure. \u201cEverybody outside the US and China should participate in the open source ecosystem, because it takes leverage away,\u201d says Nicolas Granatino, founder of startup accelerator StemAI, who holds a stake in Mistral in a personal capacity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Until fairly recently, it was unclear how to monetize open-weight models effectively, according to Granatino. Unlike the leading American labs, locked in a race to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/david-silver-ai-ineffable-intelligence-reinforcement-learning\/\" class=\"text link\">superintelligence<\/a>, Mistral has shifted its focus toward smaller, bespoke models for manufacturing, utilities, and financial services. It has also developed a cloud business through which customers can access its models, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/palantir-what-the-company-does\/#:~:text=It%20calls%20these%20workers%20%E2%80%9Cforward%20deployed%20software%20engineers%2C\" class=\"text link\">Palantir-style team of engineers<\/a> who embed within client organizations. \u201cAt the moment, we see the emergence of a product that is making the open source commitment easier,\u201d says Granatino. \u201cYou can make money running the infrastructure\u201d and help clients to customize models with their own data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/mistral-is-in-the-right-place-at-the-right-time\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mistral is having a moment.
