{"id":5077,"date":"2026-08-06T14:50:28","date_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5077"},"modified":"2026-08-06T14:50:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-06T14:50:28","slug":"microsoft-quantum-chief-majorana-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5077","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft\u2019s Quantum Chief Doesn\u2019t Care That Scientists Don\u2019t Believe His Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">The man leading<\/span> Microsoft\u2019s multibillion-dollar scheme to build a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wired-guide-to-quantum-computing\/\" class=\"text link\">quantum computer<\/a> says he isn\u2019t interested in appeasing scientists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When Zulfi Alam\u2019s team claimed last year to have effectively split an electron into so-called Majorana quasiparticles in its bid to reinvent computing, some scientists simply didn\u2019t believe the software giant. They cited inconclusive data in Microsoft\u2019s research papers and the lack of peer-review analysis for many of the results. But Alam, Microsoft\u2019s corporate vice president of quantum, tells WIRED with a chuckle, \u201cI don\u2019t really care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Microsoft is one of several tech powerhouses racing alongside a raft of startups to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/quantum-computing-is-dead-alive\/\" class=\"text link\">commercially useful quantum computers<\/a>. The goal for these companies is to create computers that could solve currently impossible problems in fields from drug development to defense by exploiting quantum mechanics to process units of information, known as bits, in a fundamentally different way than how classical machines do. (There are also concerns that quantum computers will be used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/q-day-apocalypse-quantum-computers-encryption\/\" class=\"text link\">crack encryption<\/a>.) Companies are taking different approaches to constructing quantum bits\u2014\u201cqubits\u201d for short\u2014including using neutral atoms, charged atoms, and light.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While Microsoft\u2019s approach is theoretically promising, Majorana particles, which were first hypothesized nearly 90 years ago, have proved elusive. The firm\u2019s longest-running research project has also been plagued by controversies. Last year\u2019s breakthrough announcement was met with intense skepticism by scientists, because they couldn\u2019t rule out that other physical phenomena were driving the signals Microsoft had used to draw its conclusion. In 2021, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/microsoft-retracts-disputed-quantum-computing-paper\/\" class=\"text link\">retracted<\/a> a quantum computing paper from Nature that claimed to have found evidence of Majorana particles after independent physicists pointed out issues in the data analysis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In June, the software giant <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/innovation\/majorana-2-microsoft-discovery-agentic-ai\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/innovation\/majorana-2-microsoft-discovery-agentic-ai&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/source\/features\/innovation\/majorana-2-microsoft-discovery-agentic-ai\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> it had produced a qubit that\u2019s 1,000 times more reliable than its predecessor, using Microsoft\u2019s scientific discovery AI agent. But scientists are still <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10567-8\" class=\"text link\">questioning<\/a> the Majorana work underpinning the breakthrough, as Microsoft refuses to share the raw data behind its results.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhy should I?\u201d Alam asks rhetorically.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He points to the commercial sensitivity of his work, which he says means the team cannot publicize the granular data that scientists are asking for. He also complains that the publishing process is too slow, pointing out that a paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10628-y\" class=\"text link\">published<\/a> in Nature in June was based on work done two years before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe world has changed in two years, so this notion of having peer reviews and publications doesn&#8217;t work in this fast-moving world right now,\u201d Alam says, while noting he believes there aren\u2019t enough experts to speed up the process. \u201cThat\u2019s why this paper thing is kind of boring now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Scientists aren\u2019t satisfied with that explanation. \u201cThe field is growing, there are a lot of experts outside of these firms that are able to reliably assess claims and scientific work,\u201d says physicist Trevor Lanting, chief development officer at Nasdaq-listed quantum computer maker D-Wave Quantum, which has similarly <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.dwavequantum.com\/company\/newsroom\/press-release\/d-wave-s-quantum-supremacy-result-stands\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.dwavequantum.com\/company\/newsroom\/press-release\/d-wave-s-quantum-supremacy-result-stands\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dwavequantum.com\/company\/newsroom\/press-release\/d-wave-s-quantum-supremacy-result-stands\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">faced<\/a> accusations of inflating claims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Having claims evaluated by science is \u201cpart of the healthy process of really establishing the science and the technical foundation for the technology,\u201d Lanting adds, \u201cso when a company or group says they don\u2019t have time, I would read that as \u2018our results aren\u2019t strong enough to stand up to that scrutiny.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Alam still doesn\u2019t think he needs to prove his work\u2014which he took the time to doodle a diagram of in my notebook\u2014to anyone. Instead, he plans to win over academics with the working machine.
