Every briefing I\u2019ve attended for software companies over the past year has involved some mention of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/all-my-employees-are-ai-agents-so-are-my-executives\/\" class=\"text link\">agents<\/a>\u2014using generative AI tools to automate digital tasks. Despite breakout moments at the start of 2026, like the plucky <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/malevolent-ai-agent-openclaw-clawdbot\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenClaw<\/a> agent that early adopters used to manage their online life, most people are not yet embracing this style of automation day-to-day. That won\u2019t last for long if Google gets its way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/io\/\" class=\"text link\">Google I\/O<\/a>, the tech behemoth shared its vision to make its popular search engine a core way to expose billions of existing users to the company\u2019s agentic prowess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou will be able to create, customize, and manage multiple AI agents for your many tasks, right in Search,\u201d says Liz Reid, who leads Search at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/google\/\" class=\"text link\">Google<\/a>. She gives the example of setting up an agent to track stock market trends and send you alerts using real-time data\u2014when specific conditions are met.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Alongside these agentic additions coming to Search, Google also announced a new underlying model, Gemini 3.5 Flash, as the global default model for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-ai-mode-search\/\" class=\"text link\">AI Mode answers,<\/a> as well as improvements to the Search box that make it more responsive to user inputs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Always-On Answers<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One of the key agentic experiences rolling out is a new form of dynamic data gathering through \u201cinformation agents\u201d that can be more proactive than previous search experiences and automate alerts through your conversational requests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAsk Google to just keep you updated on anything, and now our agents can do work for you even if you&#8217;re not using Google,\u201d says Robby Stein, a vice president of product for Search. \u201cSo, you could be asleep, and it&#8217;s still helping you.\u201d This feature will arrive first for subscribers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-is-google-one\/\" class=\"text link\">Google\u2019s AI Pro and Ultra plans<\/a> this summer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In Google\u2019s example of how these can work, a user asks AI Mode through the Google app to keep them \u201cupdated when any of my favorite athletes announce sneaker collabs or signature drops.\u201d Then, AI Mode generates an info agent unique to that user, designed to monitor the request. When a new shoe drops that fits these criteria, like <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/fannation\/sneakers\/news\/nike-launches-aja-wilson-second-basketball-shoe-saturday\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.si.com\/fannation\/sneakers\/news\/nike-launches-aja-wilson-second-basketball-shoe-saturday&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/fannation\/sneakers\/news\/nike-launches-aja-wilson-second-basketball-shoe-saturday\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A&#8217;ja Wilson\u2019s pink Nikes<\/a>, the user gets a notification alert with critical context and ways to buy the sneaks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Booking agents are another automation style in Search that Google will be expanding this summer. At previous I\/O conferences, Google debuted similar AI features, like the now defunct <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/google-duplex-gets-a-second-debut\/\" class=\"text link\">Duplex<\/a>, which called companies on your behalf to set up restaurant reservations or salon appointments.
