{"id":5133,"date":"2026-08-07T09:22:58","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T09:22:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5133"},"modified":"2026-08-07T09:22:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T09:22:58","slug":"meta-new-mexico-cild-safety-fine-public-nuisance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5133","title":{"rendered":"Meta ordered to pay $567 million in public nuisance ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Meta has been ordered to pay $567 million in the second phase of New Mexico\u2019s landmark child safety case, bringing total charges to nearly $1 billion for being a \u201cpublic nuisance.\u201d In a ruling published on Thursday, the Santa Fe district court found that Meta\u2019s platforms are a \u201csignificant contributing cause\u201d of a teen mental health crisis affecting public health and safety throughout New Mexico.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cThis case has always been about protecting children, standing up for families, and making sure that one of the world\u2019s largest technology companies cannot profit from practices that endanger young people without consequence,\u201d New Mexico Attorney General <a href=\"https:\/\/nmdoj.gov\/press-release\/statement-from-attorney-general-raul-torrez-on-final-judgment-in-state-of-new-mexico-v-meta\/\">Raul Torrez said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cToday\u2019s decision is a victory for every parent who has worried about what social media is doing to their child and every child who deserves to grow up safer online.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The $567 million will be put into an abatement fund that will go towards funding awareness and prevention measures, screening services, and treatment for people harmed by the company\u2019s platforms. The abatement fund order is in addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/899910\/meta-new-mexico-jury-verdict\">$375 million in civil penalties<\/a> that Meta was ordered to pay in the first phase of the New Mexico case, bringing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/policy\/922380\/new-mexico-meta-public-nuisance-trial-kids-safety\">Meta\u2019s total charges<\/a> to $942 million.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote _1lkuyz80 _19wv7tc9\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup _1lkuyz88 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe work hard to keep people safe on our platforms and have been transparent about the challenges of identifying and removing bad actors and harmful content.
