But, according to tracking data reviewed by the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/alaskabeacon.com\/briefs\/cruise-ship-helps-stranded-skiff-and-crew-in-southeast-alaska-as-zuckerberg-yacht-stands-by\/\">Alaska Beacon<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/halifaxshippingnews.ca\/2026\/08\/did-mark-zuckerbergs-yacht-not-stop-to-help.html\">Halifax Shipping News<\/a><\/em>, the closest vessel was actually Mark Zuckerberg\u2019s super yacht, Launchpad.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Michael Love, a passenger on the Wilderness Legacy, <a href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/elkmovie.bsky.social\/post\/3mscqsxfulk26\">posted on Bluesky<\/a> that the captain announced the Launchpad was closer, but \u201crepeatedly refused to respond,\u201d which was met with booing from the passengers. The AIS tracking (embedded below) seems to support that the Launchpad was closer to the vessel in trouble, but then stopped near the entrance of the bay. The Wilderness Legacy can be seen passing Launchpad, then turning around and towing the stranded boat back to safety.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The US Coast Guard and the Marine Exchange of Alaska did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But Coast Guard Public Affairs Specialist Shannon Shepard told the <em>Alaska Beacon<\/em> that \u201cat approximately 9:56 p.m., the Coast Guard determined they were not in distress and issued a marine assistance request broadcast on their behalf.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Brian Baker, spokesperson for Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, told <em>The Verge<\/em> that \u201cMark and his family were not on board at the time of the incident. As the Coast Guard noted, the boat was not in distress, and by the time the crew reviewed the Coast Guard contact on a different radio channel from the one they were operating on, the assist was already underway.
