His stake in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/david-silver-ai-ineffable-intelligence-reinforcement-learning\/\" class=\"text link\">Ineffable Intelligence<\/a>\u2014the artificial intelligence lab he founded\u2014is worth an ungodly fortune. But he stands to collect none of that money himself. He set things up that way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Between 2013 and 2025, Silver worked as a researcher at Google DeepMind. He specialized in reinforcement learning, a method of teaching an AI model through positive and negative feedback. In 2016, he led the development of AlphaGo, which became the first AI to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/03\/two-moves-alphago-lee-sedol-redefined-future\/\" class=\"text link\">defeat a human champion<\/a> in the game of Go and was heralded as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/05\/google-alpha-go-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">narrow form of superintelligence<\/a>. Silver left to start Ineffable Intelligence in January, betting that reinforcement learning breakthroughs will close the gap between human and machine cognition across the board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When he started Ineffable Intelligence, Silver raised $1.1 billion from investors at a $5.1 billion valuation, reportedly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/transactional\/uk-based-ai-startup-ineffable-raises-11-billion-europes-largest-seed-financing-2026-04-27\/\" class=\"text link\">largest seed round in Europe\u2019s history<\/a>. He also vowed to donate all the money he makes from any future sale of his company to charity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI was thinking very deeply about what I could do to have the maximum impact on the world,\u201d Silver tells WIRED in an interview at his office in Kings Cross, London, around the corner from DeepMind\u2019s headquarters. \u201cNot just through the work I do, but through the finance I arrive at in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">He\u2019ll choose how to deploy the funds after he sells his company, he says, but his ambition is to save as many lives as possible.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Silver is the latest in a growing line of AI founders to pledge equity proceeds to charity. Others include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/microsofts-ai-chief-says-machine-consciousness-is-an-illusion\/\" class=\"text link\">Mustafa Suleyman<\/a>, a DeepMind cofounder and the CEO of AI at Microsoft, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/the-hottest-startups-in-stockholm-in-2024\/\" class=\"text link\">Anton Osika<\/a>, the founder of automated coding platform Lovable. If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-confidentially-files-for-ipo\/\" class=\"text link\">OpenAI<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/anthropic-files-s1-ipo-sec\/\" class=\"text link\">Anthropic<\/a> go public as planned, minting thousands of new millionaires in the process, the AI industry could soon come to represent an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/artificial-intelligence-anthropic-ipo-effective-altruism-comeback.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/artificial-intelligence-anthropic-ipo-effective-altruism-comeback.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/artificial-intelligence-anthropic-ipo-effective-altruism-comeback.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increasingly outsize proportion of tech philanthropy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Along with a new generation of techno-philanthropists, though, comes a tangle of unresolved questions: Is philanthropy the most appropriate way to redistribute wealth? To what degree are megadonors responsible for some of the problems they aim to fix? Could a pledge that scales with a company\u2019s success come to justify <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/deaths-of-effective-altruism\/\" class=\"text link\">unsavory business practices<\/a> or reckless accelerationism? And is this go-around any different from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/get-wired-podcast-4-bill-gates\/\" class=\"text link\">previous<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/chan-zuckerberg-initiative-3-billion\/\" class=\"text link\">iterations<\/a> of Silicon Valley giving?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou can\u2019t necessarily appeal to capitalism to solve some of the problems created by capitalist practices themselves \u2026 the exacerbation of extreme wealth concentration and massive inequalities,\u201d says Linsey McGoey, professor of sociology at the University of Essex and author of <em>No Such Thing as a Free Gift<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s like calling upon the arsonist to hose down the house he\u2019s just set on fire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Silver formalized his charitable commitment through <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.founderspledge.com\/why-join\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.founderspledge.com\/why-join&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.founderspledge.com\/why-join\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Founders Pledge<\/a>, a nonprofit that helps entrepreneurs to give away their wealth. Unlike the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.givingpledge.org\/about-the-giving-pledge\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.givingpledge.org\/about-the-giving-pledge\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.givingpledge.org\/about-the-giving-pledge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Giving Pledge<\/a>, a public but nonbinding commitment, Founders Pledge requires participants to enter into a contract. \u201cThe choice of making a binding pledge was very important,\u201d says Silver.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Founders Pledge has been around since 2015. But the value of pledges recorded by the nonprofit has soared recently, from $400 million in 2023 to $4 billion so far this year. The AI industry now accounts for a third of the lifetime pledge total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The organization\u2019s goal, according to cofounder David Goldberg, is to identify \u201cthe very best ways to deploy capital at scale to make the world better.\u201d It has frequently been lumped together with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/deaths-of-effective-altruism\/\" class=\"text link\">effective altruism<\/a>, which encourages people to amass wealth in order to give it away, to rely on statistics rather than emotion, and to prioritize causes likely to have the biggest impact in the distant future.
