Anger bubbled up inside as I tapped through the Kafkaesque <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/please-stop-making-me-opt-out-of-ai\/\" class=\"text link\">opt-out process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Rather than throwing my phone across the room, I blurted to my partner that we should leave San Francisco behind and be off-grid sheep farmers. Something <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/am-i-an-idiot-for-wanting-a-dumber-phone\/\" class=\"text link\">analog<\/a>. In that moment, anything sounded better than this ongoing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/ebike-delivery-missing-when-i-tried-to-recover-it-i-ended-up-in-chatbot-hell\/\" class=\"text link\">generative-AI-induced hell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Many Americans are having similar reactions to the growing prevalence of generative AI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/this-chatbot-is-just-a-random-guy-lol\/\" class=\"text link\">in daily life<\/a>. \u201cThe AI revolution has happened, and everybody hates it,\u201d says <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/meredithbroussard.com\/about\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/meredithbroussard.com\/about\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/meredithbroussard.com\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meredith Broussard<\/a>, a data journalism professor at New York University and author of <em>Artificial Unintelligence: How Computers Misunderstand the World<\/em>. In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/712751\/americans-cool-toward.aspx\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/712751\/americans-cool-toward.aspx&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/712751\/americans-cool-toward.aspx\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent Gallup poll<\/a>, Americans\u2019 increased familiarity with generative AI coincides with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-normal-people-arent-using-ai-agents\/\" class=\"text link\">negative attitudes<\/a> about the technology. This is especially true for young people between 18 and 29, where almost half see generative AI as doing more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/generative-ai-backlash\/\" class=\"text link\">AI backlash<\/a> has been brewing for the last few years, more companies appear to be directly addressing these concerns. LinkedIn added a \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/suzanne-lucas\/linkedins-new-algorithm-update-targets-ai-slop-heres-how-your-brand-can-win-the-feed\/91384090\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.inc.com\/suzanne-lucas\/linkedins-new-algorithm-update-targets-ai-slop-heres-how-your-brand-can-win-the-feed\/91384090&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/suzanne-lucas\/linkedins-new-algorithm-update-targets-ai-slop-heres-how-your-brand-can-win-the-feed\/91384090\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">seems like AI slop<\/a>\u201d button for reporting AI-generated content on the platform, despite still hosting plenty of generative AI tools. Snapchat announced that fully AI-generated videos would <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/life\/snapchat-ai-slop-spotlight-videos\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mashable.com\/life\/snapchat-ai-slop-spotlight-videos&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/life\/snapchat-ai-slop-spotlight-videos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">no longer be eligible<\/a> for its discovery feed. Substack recently added an <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/substack-ai-detection-tool-pengram\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/substack-ai-detection-tool-pengram&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/substack-ai-detection-tool-pengram\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI detection tool<\/a> to police writers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The backlash\u2019s \u201cwhy\u201d is simple at its core. Many Americans feel like they never consented to any of this. I had no idea that my online interactions would one day be scraped en masse for AI model training. I didn\u2019t ask for Instagram to enable deepfakes on my account. I didn\u2019t want Google to push AI-generated answers at the top of search results. I woke up one day, and generative AI features were stuffed into every corner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/you-can-disable-gemini-in-chrome-if-its-freaking-you-out\/\" class=\"text link\">all the software I rely on<\/a> without my consent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Whether it&#8217;s AI models scraping your data or noisy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-data-centers-broke-american-politics\/\" class=\"text link\">data centers<\/a> popping up in your backyard, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-openai-really-wants\/\" class=\"text link\">AI revolution<\/a> seems to be an event happening to us without making us feel like active participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cConsent is really important,\u201d Broussard tells WIRED. \u201cWe can connect that to the way that women, queer people, people of color, and minorities get exploited and abused online. Tech companies have never really been sensitive to issues of consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Public backlash appears to be working, at times, in getting unwanted AI features shut down. \u201cThey just roll them out and see what sticks, because nobody really knows what this is for,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/as.tufts.edu\/anthropology\/people\/faculty\/nick-seaver\" class=\"text link\">Nick Seaver<\/a>, an associate professor of anthropology at Tufts University focusing on technology and society. Google recently rolled back the ability for people to use generative AI to tweak satellite images on Google Earth almost immediately after launching it, following <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/google-earths-new-ai-lets-anyone-fabricate-completely-bullshit-satellite-images\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.404media.co\/google-earths-new-ai-lets-anyone-fabricate-completely-bullshit-satellite-images\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/google-earths-new-ai-lets-anyone-fabricate-completely-bullshit-satellite-images\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reporting from 404 Media<\/a>. Additionally, Meta turned off the aforementioned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/meta-now-lets-anyone-use-your-instagram-photos-in-ai-images-unless-you-opt-out\/\" class=\"text link\">deepfaking tool for Instagram<\/a> users after three days of public outcry and viral videos with millions of views criticizing the feature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There\u2019s also a growing rejection of generative AI in marketing materials.
