Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has a lot to say about the idealized future he now envisions for humanity co-existing with artificial intelligence \u2014 his latest essay spans more than 6,500 words on the matter. The lengthy manifesto Zuckerberg published<\/a> on Monday, titled \u201cThe Future is for Everyone,\u201d broadly lays out his beliefs about how the technology should be developed, expanded, and regulated, and how Meta is positioning itself to enable those goals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Some points echo a similar (albeit, much shorter) public letter that Zuckerberg put out last year<\/a>, heralding the importance of public access to superintelligent AI \u2014 a term for artificial general intelligence<\/a> (AGI) models capable of surpassing human intelligence, which AI companies are racing to develop. Both were published with similar intentions: to pitch the supposed personal, societal, and economic benefits of superintelligent AI, and to grandstand Meta as a responsible steward to deliver that future.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Here are some of the main takeaways from Zuckerberg\u2019s latest essay:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Sway the public on data centers<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSustainable infrastructure development means that communities must benefit significantly from each project,\u201d Zuckerberg said, detailing how Meta plans to resolve the ongoing PR crisis<\/a> surrounding AI data center projects. This includes pledges to build energy-generating infrastructure \u201cwherever we invest\u201d that could potentially give low-cost energy back to the communities, and a commitment to \u201crestore more water than we use in the watersheds where we operate by 2030.\u201d Meta is also launching a Future Is For Everyone Fund to support local communities, and Zuckerberg says the company is providing free training and \u201cguaranteed high-paying jobs\u201d for skilled tradespeople in areas where Meta is building data centers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Meta is planning to focus its efforts on \u201cdelivering personal superintelligence to billions of people and small businesses,\u201d arguing that doing so will empower everyone to become more entrepreneurial. Part of this involves offering the technology \u201cfor free or as affordably as possible,\u201d and leaning into releasing more open source AI models that anyone can download. Doing so \u201cwill bring an abundance of personal agency, expression of ideas, deepening of relationships, economic and financial prosperity, improved health, and inventions we cannot imagine today,\u201d according to Zuckerberg. He also says this will have an impact on \u201csome aspects of the way we work,\u201d but waves off concerns that AI will result in fewer jobs overall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Less government oversight<\/h4>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Zuckerberg voices the importance of the US leading the open source AI ecosystem, citing concerns that competing models released by foreign labs \u201chold several advantages\u201d because they face fewer training data restrictions. He pitches that the US needs to rethink policies around distillation and data use, arguing that while \u201csome have tried to frame distillation as harmful,\u201d the US will not be able to keep up if it keeps restricting AI models from learning from other models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI do not believe restricting access to foreign open source models is an effective solution,\u201d said Zuckerberg. We should note here that these concerns are likely being voiced in response to the release of open-weight<\/em> models<\/a> from Chinese AI companies like Alibaba<\/a> and Moonshot<\/a>, which isn\u2019t the same thing as being open-source, and the models Meta has released so far aren\u2019t truly open-source either. He also espouses that access to personal superintelligence is essential for individuals to maintain their freedom, and should only be subject to restrictions \u201cwhen truly required.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In cases where cybersecurity is involved, Zuckerberg proposes that frontier AI labs should work with the US government to help with bolstering critical infrastructure, and believes open-source AI models will improve system security over time \u2014 especially \u201conce superintelligence enables most of the world\u2019s code to be verifiably secure.\u201d That plan includes pushing AI developers to share the training information of new models \u201cfor government use and review\u201d intermediately instead of waiting until training has completed, which aligns with the Trump administration\u2019s AI testing framework<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis way the government will have early access to the most powerful models and an army of capable engineers to identify and patch security issues,\u201d Zuckerberg said. \u201cLabs should also work with law enforcement to help identify bad actors attempting to misuse their systems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
