{"id":5323,"date":"2026-08-11T13:44:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-11T13:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5323"},"modified":"2026-08-11T13:44:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-11T13:44:32","slug":"a-new-trick-reveals-ai-models-inner-thoughts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5323","title":{"rendered":"A New Trick Reveals AI Models\u2019 Inner Thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Computer scientists recently discovered a way to extract the hidden \u201cthinking\u201d that frontier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/artificial-intelligence\" class=\"text link\">AI models<\/a> perform as they work through complex problems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The findings provide some evidence\u2014although not conclusive proof\u2014that certain Chinese models may have been trained by \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-distillation-makes-ai-models-smaller-and-cheaper\/\" class=\"text link\">distilling<\/a>\u201d reasoning information from US models that was supposedly hidden because of how closely some of their thinking or reasoning patterns seem to match. The researchers have also demonstrated that the method could be used to recover personal information, like passwords and API keys, from a model\u2019s inner reasoning, although this vulnerability has been fixed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cAll major frontier model providers we tested share this vulnerability,\u201d says Alexander Panfilov,\u2069 a computer scientist at University of T\u00fcbingen in Germany who was involved with the work. \u201cIt can lead to personal information leakage, and it enables large-scale reasoning distillation attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Panfilov and colleagues from the University of Tubingen, the Max Planck Institute, the AI safety institute MATS Research, and the security company Snyk identified the same issue with frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google that are accessed via an application programming interface or API.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/stolen-thoughts.com\/paper.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/stolen-thoughts.com\/paper.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/stolen-thoughts.com\/paper.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a paper<\/a> laying out the work, the researchers show that the open-weight or downloadable Chinese model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/moonshot-kimi-k3-ai-model-escape-sandbox\/\" class=\"text link\">Kimi K3<\/a> from Moonshot AI produces a strikingly similar output to the hidden reasoning traces\u2014the written-out reasoning steps involved in solving a problem\u2014of Claude Opus 4.8 and GPT 5.6 Sol for certain prompts. Despite the similarities, they note that the work \u201ccannot causally establish distillation.\u201d They found that two other open-weight models, China\u2019s DeepSeek and Inkling from the US company Thinking Machines, did not exhibit this kind of reasoning similarity with Claude Opus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Moonshot AI and Z.ai did not respond to a request for comment by time of publication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-distillation-makes-ai-models-smaller-and-cheaper\/\" class=\"text link\">Distillation<\/a> is a well-established, widely used technique for efficiently copying the capabilities of existing models over to new ones, and is especially common in the development of open-weight or fully downloadable models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Lately, however, distillation has become a controversial topic, because of claims that Chinese AI companies use it to essentially copy the best US models. In February, OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/openai-accuses-deepseek-distilling-us-models-gain-advantage-bloomberg-news-2026-02-12\/\" class=\"text link\">told US lawmakers<\/a> that DeekSeek seemed to have copied one of its models to build a reasoning model called R1. In June, Anthropic <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/24\/anthropic-alibaba-distillation-campaign.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/24\/anthropic-alibaba-distillation-campaign.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/06\/24\/anthropic-alibaba-distillation-campaign.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told lawmakers<\/a> that Alibaba had systematically distilled its models in order to build its own, called Qwen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There\u2019s no indication that Chinese AI companies used this specific technique to distill US-based AI models. But Panfilov and collaborators say that using their method would make it possible to distill more information from closed models than previously realized.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Mini-Me Models<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Advanced AI models solve difficult problems by breaking them into constituent parts that are analyzed in turn in a kind of artificial reasoning or \u201cchain of thought.\u201d Companies tend to keep a proprietary model\u2019s reasoning secret to prevent others from using them to train new ones. However, they typically also send an encrypted version of that reasoning to a user\u2019s computer in a way that offloads some computation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The researchers\u2019 attack relies on the fact that most AI companies also provide related models of different sizes. Larger models are more capable but also more computationally expensive to run and more expensive to access. Users may choose smaller, weaker models for certain tasks to lower costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Panfilov and his colleagues found that feeding encrypted reasoning traces to a smaller version of the same model can reveal the hidden reasoning inside.
