Now, President Donald Trump is targeting existing drone imports and parts, too. He\u2019s going to try to make them cost a lot more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/08\/adjusting-imports-of-unmanned-aircraft-systems-and-unmanned-aircraft-systems-components-into-the-united-states\/\">a presidential action<\/a>, he\u2019s declared a whopping 100 percent tariff on imports of drones with thermal cameras, drones weighing over 25kg (57 pounds), and <em>any kind of part for any kind of unmanned aircraft <\/em>weighing over 25kg \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ANNEX-I-1.pdf\">you can read the full list here.<\/a> For all other drones, including tiny sub-250-gram \u201cMini\u201d consumer drones, he\u2019s declared a 25 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In Trump fashion, these tariffs have a huge loophole: if a company commits to making some of their drones or aircraft parts in the United States, they don\u2019t have to pay tariffs. Trump suggested he\u2019d make similar deals when he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/738172\/trump-threatens-100-percent-tariff-on-computer-chips-with-a-gigantic-loophole\">threatened a 100 percent tariff on computer chips<\/a> last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">And Trump is giving the EU, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan a lower rate of 15 percent, and a rate of 10 percent for the UK, \u201cprovided that substantially all hardware, software, and technology originates from within these countries and the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Stated reasons for the new tariffs include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Trump is also dangling a carrot, not just wielding a stick. The proclamation states that he\u2019s authorizing the Secretary of Commerce to create a new program \u201cto incentivize new investment in U.S. production facilities to produce UAS and UAS components.\u201d That could be interesting, but last we checked, the government\u2019s drone incentives were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/906306\/fcc-drone-ban-who-will-replace-dji-in-us-antigravity-hoverair-skydio\">aimed towards drones for war<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">As of today, it appears that Trump\u2019s tariffs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/05\/economy\/companies-got-tariff-refunds-wheres-your-cut\">enriching corporate America at the expense of everyday citizens<\/a>. First, companies raise their prices so that you pay the cost of tariffs instead of them. Then, those companies get gigantic refunds from the government when the tariffs are declared illegal. Finally, they profit.
