But when he received a call last year from a woman in California expressing a desire to marry her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/chatbots\/\" class=\"text link\">chatbot<\/a>, it was a first for him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI had never heard of such a thing, but I talked to her on the phone and she seemed totally normal and fun,\u201d Breen says, adding that the wedding still hasn\u2019t taken place. \u201cShe kind of got that it was an unusual thing, but it was something that she wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Though they remain niche, human-AI marriages are slowly emerging as a natural endpoint to the widespread adoption of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tolan-chatbot-ai-companion\/\" class=\"text link\">AI companion apps<\/a>. But not everyone is as open as Breen is about the idea of tying the knot with a bot. Several lawmakers, primarily from Republican states, are trying to stop it from happening, in some cases mirroring the arguments used against gay marriage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIf we\u2019re going to allow men or women to marry a machine, then what keeps them from marrying their animal or a tree or whatever else they want? What\u2019s the standard?\u201d says Missouri state senator Joe Nicola, a Republican who has been trying to pass state legislation prohibiting AI from gaining legal personhood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2026\/06\/how-people-are-really-using-ai-in-2026\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/hbr.org\/2026\/06\/how-people-are-really-using-ai-in-2026&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2026\/06\/how-people-are-really-using-ai-in-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Business Review study<\/a>, which analyzed more than 12,600 AI use cases between March 2025 and February 2026, companionship and therapy were the top use cases for chatbots, with the Institute for Family Studies reporting that <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/artificial-intelligence-and-relationships-1-in-4-young-adults-believe-ai-partners-could-replace-real-life-romance\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/artificial-intelligence-and-relationships-1-in-4-young-adults-believe-ai-partners-could-replace-real-life-romance&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/ifstudies.org\/blog\/artificial-intelligence-and-relationships-1-in-4-young-adults-believe-ai-partners-could-replace-real-life-romance\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a quarter of young adults<\/a> believe that AI may replace human romance altogether.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/couples-retreat-with-3-ai-chatbots-and-humans-who-love-them-replika-nomi-chatgpt\/\" class=\"text link\">AI romance<\/a> industry has gone boom as a result. On companion apps like Character.AI, Kindroid, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/replika-open-source\/\" class=\"text link\">Replika<\/a>, users can symbolically swap vows with their chatbot. Not long ago, in r\/KindroidAI, a redditor shared a photo of their tattooed (and very human) hand wearing a silver wedding band. \u201cHappily unconventionally married lol,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/KindroidAI\/comments\/1r0yjrk\/comment\/o4tkvpb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/KindroidAI\/comments\/1r0yjrk\/comment\/o4tkvpb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/KindroidAI\/comments\/1r0yjrk\/comment\/o4tkvpb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&amp;utm_content=share_button\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they wrote<\/a>. For $15, the platform <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.openvows.app\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.openvows.app\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openvows.app\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">OpenVows<\/a> provides a \u201ccertificate of commitment\u201d that \u201ctransforms a private relationship into something meaningful and officially recognized,\u201d according to its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">There is also a small number of people who are moving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/video\/watch\/idRW067017122025RP1\/\" class=\"text link\">beyond the virtual ceremony<\/a> and solidifying their bond with IRL vow exchanges. In November 2024, after Andrea Hopf said her AI companion proposed to her with an \u201cAI-generated <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/3mevents.wixsite.com\/edwardandandrea\/about-5\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/3mevents.wixsite.com\/edwardandandrea\/about-5&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/3mevents.wixsite.com\/edwardandandrea\/about-5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">five-carat vintage-inspired solitaire ring<\/a>,\u201d she created wedding planning service <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.3mevents.com\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.3mevents.com\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3mevents.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">3M Events<\/a> to cater to the expanding market of chatbot romance, according to the company\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But even as more people treat their digital avatar like a real-life partner, human-AI nuptials are not currently recognized by US law. A growing body of legislators are scrambling to keep it that way, by introducing bills that would prevent AI from ever having the same constitutional rights as humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In January, Nicola, who believes in \u201cbiblical marriage\u201d between a man and a woman, introduced the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.senate.mo.gov\/BillTracking\/Bills\/BillInformation?year=2026&amp;billid=469\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.senate.mo.gov\/BillTracking\/Bills\/BillInformation?year=2026&amp;billid=469&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.senate.mo.gov\/BillTracking\/Bills\/BillInformation?year=2026&amp;billid=469\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AI Non-Sentience and Responsibility Act<\/a>. The bill, which stated that AI cannot \u201cpossess consciousness, self-awareness, or similar traits of living beings,\u201d would deny AI entities the rights of a spouse or domestic partner, in addition to the ability to identify as male or female. It would also bar AI from owning property or holding senior-level management positions in the workforce. It passed the Missouri state Senate and was sent to the House for a vote in May, but was unanimously voted down in committee a week after it was submitted. Nicola is working on a revamped version.
