The revelation is raising new concerns about how big tech companies handle <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wired.com\/articulos\/revelan-lista-de-paginas-que-sirvieron-para-entrenar-inteligencia-artificial\" class=\"text link\">their users\u2019 data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The opt-out process is simple. From the Twitch website or mobile app, click on your account avatar, select <strong>Settings,<\/strong> and then go to the <strong>Security and Privacy<\/strong> section in the menu. There, you\u2019ll find the <strong>Generative AI Training<\/strong> option, where you can disable the use of your content for that purpose.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the language next to the toggle, Twitch <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/help.twitch.tv\/s\/article\/twitch-account-settings?language=en_US\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/help.twitch.tv\/s\/article\/twitch-account-settings?language=en_US&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/help.twitch.tv\/s\/article\/twitch-account-settings?language=en_US\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">notes<\/a> that \u201cdisabling this option does not prevent Twitch and Amazon from using your channel\u2019s content for other purposes described in Twitch\u2019s Privacy Notice.\u201d These include AI-powered platform features designed to facilitate streamers\u2019 growth and monetization, such as real-time assistance for sponsorship campaigns, viewer discovery through recommendations, and community safety via tools like AutoMod.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The new setting aims to recognize creators\u2019 right to decide how the content they produce is used. However, its launch has also raised questions about how Twitch and Amazon have used that content up to now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a forum dedicated to the topic, more than 16,000 creators <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/twitch.uservoice.com\/forums\/923383-creators-and-stream-features\/suggestions\/51352369-make-all-ai-features-optional-and-opt-out-by-defa?page=1&amp;per_page=20\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/twitch.uservoice.com\/forums\/923383-creators-and-stream-features\/suggestions\/51352369-make-all-ai-features-optional-and-opt-out-by-defa?page=1&amp;per_page=20&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/twitch.uservoice.com\/forums\/923383-creators-and-stream-features\/suggestions\/51352369-make-all-ai-features-optional-and-opt-out-by-defa?page=1&amp;per_page=20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expressed<\/a> opposition to having their content being used by default to train Amazon\u2019s AI systems\u2014a practice that only came to light following the update to the settings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The backlash arose after a livestream in which Mary Kish, Twitch\u2019s head of community, explained the introduction of the changes. The executive <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:n4xvogpdvigzat5vdcgs53g3\/post\/3msvuadgtts2r\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:n4xvogpdvigzat5vdcgs53g3\/post\/3msvuadgtts2r&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/bsky.app\/profile\/did:plc:n4xvogpdvigzat5vdcgs53g3\/post\/3msvuadgtts2r\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acknowledged<\/a> that the change would provoke a negative reaction. Mike Minton, Twitch\u2019s head of product, also noted\u2014in what he described as \u201ca candid response\u201d\u2014that keeping the option to use content for AI training enabled by default was necessary, since otherwise \u201cno one would participate\u201d in the process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Minton pointed out that these mechanisms are not unique to Twitch and considered it likely that other companies developing AI systems are also extracting content from Twitch and other services to use in training their models. \u201cI don\u2019t know for sure,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I think it\u2019s quite reasonable to assume that almost any publicly available content is used to train models in one way or another, with or without permission. So I think we also need to acknowledge that there\u2019s a lot here that\u2019s beyond even our direct control.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">These statements raised new questions: Since when has Twitch content been used to train AI models? Is Amazon the only company using this data, or are its business partners also involved? To what extent and in what ways is the authorship of content published by creators respected?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Twitch\u2019s Terms of Service, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/legal.twitch.com\/es-mx\/legal\/terms-of-service\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/legal.twitch.com\/es-mx\/legal\/terms-of-service\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/legal.twitch.com\/es-mx\/legal\/terms-of-service\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in effect<\/a> since March 2024, have stipulated that users grant Twitch and its sublicensees the right to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, distribute, and create derivative works from their content. However, until now, they have not explicitly stated that such materials could be used to train generative AI models.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">The Training Data Problem<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This case highlights one of the major challenges facing AI system developers: the growing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/youtube-training-data-apple-nvidia-anthropic\/\" class=\"text link\">shortage of high-quality data<\/a> for training models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Although companies like OpenAI have reached agreements with various publishers (including WIRED\u2019s corporate parent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/conde-nast-openai-deal\/\" class=\"text link\">Cond\u00e9 Nast<\/a>) to use some of their content for this purpose, available data sources are dwindling as technology advances and the demand for data increases.
