{"id":5659,"date":"2026-08-18T11:33:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T11:33:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5659"},"modified":"2026-08-18T11:33:40","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T11:33:40","slug":"you-can-finally-buy-a-fairphone-a-sustainable-repairable-smartphone-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=5659","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: You Can Finally Buy a Fairphone\u2014a Sustainable, Repairable Smartphone\u2014in the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck tells WIRED that he sees his company\u2019s products as a good alternative for consumers who are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/we-are-in-the-knockout-round-of-price-increases-for-consumer-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">feeling the pinch<\/a> of the current economy. \u201cIf you look to the US market, it&#8217;s heavily duopolistic with very little real consumer choice,\u201d van Eck says. \u201cAmericans are exhausted by planned obsolescence, closed-box ecosystems, and expensive yearly upgrades.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The US is a tough market to crack, with a duopoly held by Apple and Samsung. It&#8217;s worse for phone brands not sold through US carriers, which is how most Americans acquire new phones; carriers drive as much as 66 percent of smartphone sales according to a 2025 report from the International Data Corporation. This situation has forced many companies to pull out: OnePlus recently announced its decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/oneplus-is-all-but-dead\/\" class=\"text link\">exit the North American market<\/a>, following several other phone makers over the last few years, including <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@julianchokkattu\/post\/DL6UAOmM8Ya\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@julianchokkattu\/post\/DL6UAOmM8Ya&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.com\/@julianchokkattu\/post\/DL6UAOmM8Ya\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">HMD Mobile<\/a>, Sony, and LG Mobile. To counter that narrative, van Eck says Fairphone is already in discussions with major carriers and mobile virtual network operators (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/prepaid-phone-plans-and-mvnos\/\" class=\"text link\">MVNOs<\/a>) to sell its device through their stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While Google&#8217;s Android powers the company&#8217;s mobile hardware, it has a few features of its own. For example, you can flip a physical switch on the Fairphone (Gen 6+) to enable <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/support.fairphone.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/26886939326610-How-to-set-up-Fairphone-Moments\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/support.fairphone.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/26886939326610-How-to-set-up-Fairphone-Moments&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/support.fairphone.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/26886939326610-How-to-set-up-Fairphone-Moments\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Fairphone Moments<\/a>, a minimal interface designed to reduce digital distractions. Van Eck hopes the minor performance boost in the Gen 6+ will help it support more advanced software features\u2014such as AI-powered capabilities that often require more RAM. Speaking of, he says Fairphone isn&#8217;t immune to the challenges of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/solving-the-pc-memory-crisis\/\" class=\"text link\">global memory crisis<\/a>, but its \u201cdeep relationships\u201d with suppliers have tremendously helped the company secure components.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe do not view our codependence on US technology as a compromise or a downside, but as a powerful synergy,\u201d van Eck says. \u201cYou could say we take the best of US innovation, which drives the industry performance, and we wrap it with European care for planet and people. This creates, I would say, a stronger product than either side could build in isolation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The company is finally growing, too, thanks to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/fairphone-proves-you-really-dont-give-a-damn\/\" class=\"text link\">newfound marketing strategy<\/a> of focusing on the quality of the product, rather than the company&#8217;s ethical mission. It&#8217;s seeing growth year-over-year for the fourth quarter in a row, with phone shipments jumping 74 percent in the first half of 2026 compared to the prior year.
