Ball publishes an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.matthewball.co\/all\/presentation-the-state-of-video-gaming-in-2026\">state of video gaming report<\/a>, which is a popular read across the game industry, and he\u2019s \u201cwidely respected across gaming, media, and technology,\u201d according to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Sharma announced Ball is joining Microsoft in a memo to Xbox employees this morning, seen by <em>The Verge<\/em>. She described Ball as a \u201clongtime gamer,\u201d who has held strategy and leadership roles at Illumination, Amazon Studios, Otter Media, and Accenture Strategy. \u201cMatthew has been partnering with us on strategy since day 10 and will officially start this month, reporting to me,\u201d says Sharma.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">That means Ball has been helping advise Sharma on Xbox strategy early on in her leadership, since it has been 90 days since she first took over as Xbox chief. I\u2019ve been waiting to hear a clearer strategy on the future of Xbox beyond \u201ca return of Xbox,\u201d and the recruitment of Ball certainly explains why we haven\u2019t seen that yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Xbox also has a new chief technology officer. \u201cScott Van Vliet is joining as our CTO,\u201d says Sharma. \u201cScott has spent more than two decades building technology and consumer platforms across cloud, commerce, gaming, and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Scott Van Vliet led Azure AI infrastructure at Microsoft before joining Xbox, and he has previously worked at Amazon on Fire TV, the Appstore, and more. \u201cScott has also been part of the XBOX community since the original Live beta in 2002,\u201d says Sharma. \u201cThere are no changes to Hardware, Helix, or OS, which will continue reporting to me. Scott will begin ramping up now and formally start after Showcase.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Sharma is also promoting Chris Schnakenberg to corporate vice president of partnerships and business development as part of today\u2019s Xbox leadership changes. These are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/news\/923908\/microsoft-xbox-reorg-platform-changes\">second major Xbox leadership changes<\/a> in a matter of weeks. Earlier this month Sharma adding some new faces to Xbox who used to work alongside her in Microsoft\u2019s CoreAI division.
