Riot Games is already winding down work on 2XKO<\/em>, the free-to-play League of Legends<\/em> fighting game, less than a year after its initial launch. Riot says<\/a> \u201cactive development\u201d will conclude at the end of 2026 because the company hasn\u2019t \u201cseen enough players stick with the game to get to a path toward sustainability.\u201d Servers will stay online \u201cbeyond 2026,\u201d and Riot is unlocking all playable characters and refunding money spent on the game.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

2XKO<\/em> launched in an early access beta on PC in October 2025 and hit PS5 and Xbox Series X \/ S in January<\/a>. But shortly after, Riot announced it would be cutting staff working on the game<\/a>, saying at the time that \u201coverall momentum hasn\u2019t reached the level needed to support a team of this size long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It seems like things never turned a corner. Riot says in its Thursday announcement that it evaluated the game\u2019s overall performance through the year, and while there were some bright spots with new character releases and competitive events, it wasn\u2019t enough to keep the game going. \u201cEven in these highlight moments, however, we saw no meaningful, sustained change in 2XKO<\/em>\u2019s trajectory; only a fraction of what it would take to trend toward sustainability,\u201d Riot says. \u201cOver time it became clear it would be impossible for us to continue actively developing the game as we are today.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Riot says it would have continued development if \u201cwe saw any viable future,\u201d but notes that \u201c2XKO<\/em> costs us substantially more to operate than it brings in, and engagement has stayed relatively flat despite our larger updates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2XKO<\/em> is just the latest big live service bet that hasn\u2019t panned out. Just this week, Bloomberg<\/em> reported<\/a> that Sony is stripping live service elements from its in-development multiplayer Horizon<\/em> title. Highguard<\/em>, following its closing announcement at December\u2019s Game Awards, permanently shut down less than two months after launch<\/a>. Earlier this year, Remedy announced a final major update for FBC: Firebreak<\/em><\/a>, its live service shooter set in the Control<\/em> universe \u2014 though like Riot\u2019s plan for 2XKO<\/em>, Remedy has chosen to keep Firebreak<\/em> online. Even Fortnite<\/em> isn\u2019t immune to problems, as developer Epic Games laid off staff in March<\/a> following a \u201cdownturn in Fortnite<\/em> engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
