If one part of the NHS is already doing without Palantir, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uk-government-palantir-warning-report\/\" class=\"text link\">politicians are asking<\/a>, why can\u2019t the rest of the country?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In 2023, the UK commissioned Palantir to develop a \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/nhs-fdp-explained\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/nhs-fdp-explained\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/nhs-fdp-explained\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federated data platform<\/a>\u201d (FDP) that could ingest and organize the tangle of health data produced across the country. According to Palantir and the NHS, the new system is already cutting wait times and the length of hospital stays, and maximizing the use of operating theatres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But lately, as Palantir technology is deployed in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-12\/palantir-israel-agree-to-strategic-partnership-for-battle-tech\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-12\/palantir-israel-agree-to-strategic-partnership-for-battle-tech&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-12\/palantir-israel-agree-to-strategic-partnership-for-battle-tech\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">theatres of war<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/congress-turns-up-pressure-on-dhs-over-palantirs-role-in-immigration-crackdown\/\" class=\"text link\">US administration\u2019s immigration crackdown<\/a>, its deal with the NHS has become a flashpoint in the UK, drawing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/palantir-protests-nhs-conference-uk\/\" class=\"text link\">protests<\/a>, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/nopalantir.org.uk\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/nopalantir.org.uk\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/nopalantir.org.uk\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">petitions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uk-government-palantir-warning-report\/\" class=\"text link\">parliamentary inquiries<\/a>, and a reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/dbb67083-bd1d-46e9-b196-1438d54c5795?syn-25a6b1a6=1\" class=\"text link\">rebellion<\/a> among NHS workers. The board claims it doesn\u2019t need Palantir, that its own platform is functionally superior and more trusted by the public. \u201c[Even] a technically strong platform will struggle to realize value if clinicians, data controllers, patients or the public do not trust it,\u201d Matt Hennessey, chief data and analytics officer at NHS Greater Manchester, tells WIRED. \u201cIf we were to fully adopt the FDP \u2026 it would be a retrograde step.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That claim\u2014disputed by Palantir and other FDP advocates\u2014has fed into a national debate over whether the government should seize an opportunity next February to terminate the NHS contract early, instead of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/#what-are-the-key-timings-of-the-contract\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/#what-are-the-key-timings-of-the-contract&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/digitaltechnology\/nhs-federated-data-platform\/security-privacy\/contract-explainer\/#what-are-the-key-timings-of-the-contract\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">allowing it to run until 2031<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/394\/bmj-2026-100436\" class=\"text link\">decades<\/a>, NHS workers have used a combination of digital systems, spreadsheets, paper, and whiteboards to keep track of patients. Without a way for different types of care providers to share information effectively, NHS administrators have had to base funding and resource allocation decisions on an incomplete patchwork of data. Palantir\u2019s FDP is meant to change all that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The NHS began to roll out the FDP in early 2024. The various components all share the same underlying technology scaffolding, in theory making it possible for tools developed in one corner of the country to be readily adopted in another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cYou can lift and shift. That\u2019s the real power of the FDP,\u201d says Tom Bartlett, an independent IT consultant who previously oversaw the national-level FDP rollout as deputy director of data engineering at NHS England. \u201cThe other advantage is that you\u2019ve got a surface for artificial intelligence to work across.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Within the sprawling NHS, two types of organizations can access the FDP: trusts that run hospitals and local care, and integrated care boards (ICBs), responsible for planning and commissioning health care services at a regional level.
