Watson speculated in her post that \u201cmaybe the reason the WNBA refuses to define \u2018woman\u2019 and definitively say that men can&#8217;t play in the league is because there is already a man &#8230; in the league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The baseless and inflammatory remark (Griner is a cisgender woman) came amid an ongoing moral panic about transgender women in sports, which has been ginned up by MAGA world and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" class=\"text link\">Donald Trump<\/a> with help from a handful of female athletes. The most outspoken of these is Riley Gaines, a former collegiate swimmer for the University of Kentucky; she tied for fifth in a 2022 NCAA championship event with Lia Thomas, a transgender competitor, and soon <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/riley-gaines-anti-trans-lia-thomas-ncaa-trump\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/riley-gaines-anti-trans-lia-thomas-ncaa-trump\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2025\/11\/riley-gaines-anti-trans-lia-thomas-ncaa-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rocketed to fame<\/a> as an anti-transgender activist thanks to the grievance-industrial complex of the far right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham, a shooting guard and small forward for the Indiana Fever, has likewise begun to embrace a role as spokeswoman for this rancorous movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cunningham made waves with a July ESPN <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49306657\/sophie-cunningham-finger-point-indiana-fever-wnba\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49306657\/sophie-cunningham-finger-point-indiana-fever-wnba&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49306657\/sophie-cunningham-finger-point-indiana-fever-wnba\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">profile<\/a> that quoted her opposition to allowing trans women in leagues such as the WNBA, becoming an icon of transphobic fear-mongering overnight. She explained in the interview that she wanted to \u201cprotect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn&#8217;t have to go against biological men.\u201d In subsequent comments, Cunningham <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7464960\/2026\/07\/22\/sophie-cunningham-trans-comments-womens-sports\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7464960\/2026\/07\/22\/sophie-cunningham-trans-comments-womens-sports\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7464960\/2026\/07\/22\/sophie-cunningham-trans-comments-womens-sports\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reaffirmed her stance<\/a>: \u201cI think it\u2019s kind of common sense,\u201d she told members of the press before a game. \u201cI think it\u2019s really important to protect children, and that\u2019s little girls who are also involved in that category. I stand on what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But the uproar over the WNBA not expressly forbidding the inclusion of trans athletes is much ado about nothing. No transgender women have ever played in the league, which noted in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49594734\/wnba-task-force-discusses-transgender-athletes-amid-furor\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49594734\/wnba-task-force-discusses-transgender-athletes-amid-furor&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/wnba\/story\/_\/id\/49594734\/wnba-task-force-discusses-transgender-athletes-amid-furor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> this month that there are also \u201cno immediate eligibility matters\u201d for it to address.
