At its peak, it will have a threshold magnitude of 0.93, meaning that approximately 93 percent of the moon\u2019s diameter will be within the darkest part of Earth\u2019s shadow. Here\u2019s what to expect and how to view it.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">August Lunar Eclipse Timeline<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While Europe was the prime viewing spot for the recent solar eclipse, the Americas will be the best location for viewing Thursday\u2019s lunar event. The peak will occur at night across North and South America. Europe will also get a glimpse, but viewers there will have to wait until dawn. Even then, opportunities will be limited. In locations across Spain, for example, the breaking of day and the moon\u2019s low altitude will make observation difficult. (Don\u2019t feel too bad for folks there, though. They got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/best-photos-august-solar-eclipse-spain\/\" class=\"text link\">stunning view<\/a> of the total solar eclipse a few weeks ago.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Below is a list of the best times to observe the lunar eclipse in different cities, using local times for when the event will reach its peak. If you\u2019re wanting to get the full experience, though, you can look toward the sky earlier and plan to stick around after.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"paywall\">\n<li>New York: 12:14 am<\/li>\n<li>Chicago: 11:14 pm<\/li>\n<li>Denver: 10:14 pm<\/li>\n<li>Los Angeles: 9:14 pm<\/li>\n<li>Mexico City: 10:14 pm<\/li>\n<li>Lima &#8211; 11:14 pm<\/li>\n<li>Buenos Aires: 1:14 am<\/li>\n<li>London: 5:12 am<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">What Causes a Blood Moon?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">During a lunar eclipse, the moon usually takes on reddish tones. If the eclipse is total, it\u2019s called a blood moon. The reason? Sunlight passes through Earth\u2019s atmosphere before hitting the moon\u2019s surface. During that passage, some of that light\u2014specifically the blue wavelengths\u2014is filtered out by the atmosphere leaving only the red end of the spectrum to reach the moon. The eclipse will be full enough that the effect will be pronounced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIt\u2019s as if all of the world\u2019s sunrises and sunsets are projected onto the moon,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/moon\/march-2026-total-lunar-eclipse-your-questions-answered\/\" class=\"text link\">explains NASA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">How Can You Best View a Lunar Eclipse?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Unlike solar eclipses, you don\u2019t need special eye protection to observe them. You can look directly at the moon during all phases of the event. However, there are a few tips that can significantly enhance your viewing experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The first is basic but very useful: Get away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/citizen-scientists-show-light-pollution-erases-stars-from-the-sky\/\" class=\"text link\">areas with light pollution<\/a> and try to find an unobstructed view of the sky. The roof or terrace of a house can be a good observation spot. Even if you can\u2019t get out of the city, though, you\u2019ll still be able to see the eclipse (weather permitting).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">You can also pick out your spot to post up before the eclipse reaches it maximum extent. Observing earlier will allow you to appreciate how the Earth\u2019s shadow gradually advances across the lunar surface.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">If you have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/best-binoculars\/\" class=\"text link\">binoculars<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/celestron-starsense-dobsonian-telescope\/\" class=\"text link\">telescope<\/a>, you should absolutely grab them or get set up beforehand. They\u2019ll allow you to see more details of the moon and the advancing shadow across its surface. If you have a telescope, pay special attention to the boundary between the illuminated part of the moon and the area covered by Earth\u2019s shadow.
