On Nvidia\u2019s earnings call<\/a> Wednesday, CEO Jensen Huang casually announced the company had \u201cachieved AGI,\u201d one of the tech industry\u2019s ultimate goals some of its biggest players have spent years chasing. Almost immediately, Huang dismissed the coveted milestone as \u201csenseless.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He\u2019s right. For the supposed finish line of the AI race, there is no consensus on what artificial general intelligence means, let alone how we\u2019ll know when we\u2019ve actually got there, which makes achieving it equally arbitrary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Asked about OpenAI\u2019s pursuit of AGI, Huang said that when it comes to Nvidia, \u201cfor many tasks, we could say that we\u2019ve already achieved AGI.\u201d He did not provide a precise definition or benchmark, but added, \u201cI think of all of those milestones and all those, you know, they\u2019re kind of senseless at this point.\u201d He also pointed to AI moving beyond responding to simple prompts to autonomous agents capable of learning new skills and improving themselves \u201crecursively.\u201d What really matters, Huang said, is that AI is \u201cdoing productive and useful work\u201d and \u201cgenerating profitable tokens,\u201d with more compute producing more tokens \u2014 and, inevitably, more profit. \u201cThis is the exact phase where we\u2019re at. Which is the reason why everybody\u2019s leaning in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Huang has said we\u2019ve reached AGI. In March, during an appearance<\/a> on the Lex Fridman podcast, he plainly stated, \u201cI think we\u2019ve achieved AGI.\u201d Huang didn\u2019t say exactly what he meant by AGI. Fridman proposed his own oddly specific definition: an AI system that\u2019s able to \u201cessentially do your job,\u201d as in start, grow, and run a successful tech company worth more than $1 billion. Walking back his earlier claims, Huang said that \u201cthe odds of 100,000 of those agents building Nvidia is zero percent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Over the years, other tech leaders have capitalized on the term\u2019s fuzziness and produced a veritable grab bag of definitions and benchmarks, all orbiting the same nebulous concept: AI capable of matching or surpassing human intelligence across a broad range of domains, despite the fact that \u201cintelligence\u201d<\/a> also doesn\u2019t have a universally agreed-upon definition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The definition of AGI according to OpenAI \u2013 a company founded with the explicit goal<\/a> of building it \u2013 leaves a lot of room for interpretation. In its charter<\/a>, OpenAI defines AGI as \u201chighly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.\u201d Altman himself has acknowledged<\/a> that this is hardly a measurable standard, admitting last year that AGI is \u201cnot a super useful term.\u201d Complicating matters is OpenAI\u2019s different, financially-driven definition of AGI it worked out with Microsoft \u2014 reportedly<\/a> systems that can generate at least $100 billion in profits. In a recent Time<\/em> story<\/a>, chief research officer Mark Chen estimated OpenAI is \u201c80% of the way\u201d to AGI, while Altman said that by the end of the year the company would have something he<\/em> would call AGI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The fact that both AGI and its threshold remain undefined is no secret: tech leaders say so themselves, even as they make predictions predicated on it. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called<\/a> AGI \u201cimprecise,\u201d even a \u201cmarketing term<\/a>,\u201d preferring instead to talk about \u201cpowerful AI.\u201d Others have similarly reached for their own terms<\/a> to describe broadly similar ideas. In theory, there are supposed to be distinctions between them, but in practice they all bleed together. Meta talks about \u201cpersonal superintelligence,\u201d Microsoft \u201chumanist superintelligence,\u201d and Amazon \u201cuseful general intelligence.\u201d Google DeepMind\u2019s Demis Hassabis has taken to talking about how we\u2019ve arrived at the \u201cfoothills of the singularity.\u201d<\/a> And OpenAI cofounder Ilya Sutskever, who reportedly<\/a> led employees in chants of \u201cfeel the AGI,\u201d now runs a company called Safe Superintelligence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Well, unless you want a handy tool for hyping up progress. So expect the industry \u2014 Huang included \u2014 to keep the AGI talk coming.
