Now He\u2019s Collaborating on a Tool to Help Them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Since early 2023,<\/span> photographer Jingna Zhang and a small crew of volunteers have worked tirelessly to maintain an image-sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/social-media\/\" class=\"text link\">social media<\/a> and portfolio app called <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/cara.app\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/cara.app\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/cara.app\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cara<\/a>. So far, it has attracted about 1.5 million artists. What drew them to the platform? A shared opposition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/cara-portfolio-app-artificial-intelligence-jingna-zhang\/\" class=\"text link\">unauthorized use of their work<\/a> to train AI models and a desire to publicize their art while avoiding exploitation by Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But while Cara filters out AI images and offers protective features\u2014including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kudurru-ai-scraping-block-poisoning-spawning\/\" class=\"text link\">Glaze<\/a>, a tool meant to mask the style of the images picked up by scrapers in order to disrupt AI mimicry\u2014preventing scrapes themselves is nearly impossible. And just this month, beginning on August 13, Cara was subjected to three major scrapes, which spiked its server fees and alarmed creators who had migrated there from platforms like Instagram, where all content is explicitly available to Meta as training data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The first of these incidents came to light when the individual responsible posted a 12-terabyte archive of 12 million works from Cara\u2014more or less its entire library of publicly available images\u2014on the subreddit r\/DefendingAIArt. \u201cIt was a fun project,\u201d <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Artists\/comments\/1vncv3x\/cara_an_anti_ai_software_for_artists_has_been\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Artists\/comments\/1vncv3x\/cara_an_anti_ai_software_for_artists_has_been\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Artists\/comments\/1vncv3x\/cara_an_anti_ai_software_for_artists_has_been\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> the redditor, MandarinDawnPoppy994, in his since-deleted post, saying the process cost him less than $10.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWe actually found out about it through our users tagging us,\u201d Zhang tells WIRED, since the scraper was \u201cgloating and looking for other people to join him to do something with the dataset on Reddit,\u201d sparking a fierce debate across AI-related forums about the ethics of what he had done. \u201cI just feel it&#8217;s targeted and very hurtful,\u201d she adds, noting that \u201claws are not caught up on\u201d protections against such data harvests, meaning that scrapers can often justify it as technically legal. (Zhang is separately part of two ongoing class actions brought by visual artists, one against Stability AI, Midjourney, and others and the second against Google, alleging that the companies\u2019 image generator tools were trained on their copyrighted work.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a surprising turn of events, however, the person who grabbed all the art off Cara would turn out to regret his stunt and agree to collaborate with Zhang on a new open-source tool to protect artists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the meantime, unfortunately, other scrapers continued to take advantage of Cara\u2019s vulnerabilities and minimal resources. While a number of AI proponents <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DefendingAIArt\/comments\/1vmzv8t\/comment\/p3emgjb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DefendingAIArt\/comments\/1vmzv8t\/comment\/p3emgjb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/DefendingAIArt\/comments\/1vmzv8t\/comment\/p3emgjb\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web3x&amp;utm_name=web3xcss&amp;utm_term=1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">objected<\/a> to going after Cara, a few were apparently emboldened by MandarinDawnPoppy994 to carry out what Zhang sees as \u201ccopycat\u201d attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A second scraper pulled about <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1vp0nu3\/another_user_went_and_swept_up_cara_then_uploaded\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1vp0nu3\/another_user_went_and_swept_up_cara_then_uploaded\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/antiai\/comments\/1vp0nu3\/another_user_went_and_swept_up_cara_then_uploaded\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">8.5 million links<\/a> from Cara, as well as metadata like usernames, titles, and tags, and <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/CaptiveDreamer\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/huggingface.co\/CaptiveDreamer&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/CaptiveDreamer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uploaded<\/a> these to Hugging Face, the AI developer platform. After Hugging Face was bombarded with takedown requests, it responded in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/datasets\/CaptiveDreamer\/CaraArchive\/discussions\/57#6a85764c9199d43e5f82ca41\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/huggingface.co\/datasets\/CaptiveDreamer\/CaraArchive\/discussions\/57#6a85764c9199d43e5f82ca41&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/huggingface.co\/datasets\/CaptiveDreamer\/CaraArchive\/discussions\/57#6a85764c9199d43e5f82ca41\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> that while it would issue a notice to the user, \u201cCaptiveDreamer,\u201d to remove the personal metadata, it could not do the same for the URLs, since \u201cno copies of the artworks are hosted here,\u201d and the links \u201cpoint to the copies the artists published on Cara.\u201d The company concluded that \u201cfurther copyright reports on the same basis will not change this outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Finally, on August 22, a third scraper obtained 123,000 images from Cara, along with text posts and user bios that included personal information, sharing it all on a site called <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/academictorrents.com\/details\/77d4e2a65852258420a8e47bf29c8f3a5043a446\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/academictorrents.com\/details\/77d4e2a65852258420a8e47bf29c8f3a5043a446&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/academictorrents.com\/details\/77d4e2a65852258420a8e47bf29c8f3a5043a446\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Academic Torrents<\/a>.
