In an email from Meta management shared by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/read-meta-layoff-email-employees-2026-5\"><em>Business Insider<\/em><\/a>, impacted staffers were told that the planned headcount reduction was part of the company\u2019s \u201ccontinued effort to run the company more efficiently and to allow us to offset the other investments we\u2019re making.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">Reports of an upcoming wave of layoffs started circulating in March, though at that time Meta was believed to be cutting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/business\/895026\/meta-laying-off-20-percent\">up to 20 percent<\/a> of its total company headcount. According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/917690\/meta-is-laying-off-10-percent-of-its-staff\">recent memo shared in May<\/a>, the layoffs are now believed to be impacting approximately 8,000 people, around 10 percent of Meta\u2019s 78,000 employees.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">The layoffs follow Meta <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.atmeta.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2026\/Meta-Reports-Fourth-Quarter-and-Full-Year-2025-Results\/default.aspx\">forecasting in January<\/a> that it will spend $115 billion-$135 billion in capital expenditures in 2026, which would be used to \u201csupport our Meta Superintelligence Labs efforts and core business.\u201d That\u2019s almost double the $72.22 billion spent by the company in 2025 by comparison. Alongside cutting active roles, <em>Business Insider<\/em> reports that Meta is moving more than 7,000 staffers to work on new AI initiatives, and 6,000 open roles are being closed, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-23\/meta-tells-staff-it-will-cut-10-of-jobs-in-push-for-efficiency\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1ymtmqpi _17nnmdy1 _17nnmdy0 _1xwtict1\">\u201cWe want to say again that we\u2019re grateful for your contributions.
