{"id":6260,"date":"2026-08-31T11:28:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T11:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6260"},"modified":"2026-08-31T11:28:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T11:28:10","slug":"why-salmonella-cyclospora-make-americans-sick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6260","title":{"rendered":"Why Food Keeps Making Everybody Sick This Summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">This summer, every<\/span> meal feels like a risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Just as the US is recovering from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everyone-thinks-they-have-diarrhea-parasite\/\" class=\"text link\">major cyclospora outbreak<\/a> stemming from tainted iceberg lettuce, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/salmonella-is-everywhere\/\" class=\"text link\">salmonella<\/a> has turned up in jalape\u00f1os, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/sous-vide-salmonella-eggs\/\" class=\"text link\">eggs<\/a>, and even dog food. The jalape\u00f1o-related outbreak is now responsible for at least 431 illnesses and 57 hospitalizations in more than two dozen states. Meanwhile, a dual-pathogen outbreak of E. coli and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/food-safety-gear-salmonella\/\" class=\"text link\">salmonella<\/a> linked to alfalfa sprouts has affected 55 people across 15 states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">But is it just your overactive imagination that these outbreaks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/everyone-thinks-they-have-diarrhea-parasite\/\" class=\"text link\">worse than normal<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To answer that, WIRED tallied up publicly available numbers from the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s investigations of foodborne illnesses. The agency has identified more than 12,800 illnesses tied to foodborne outbreaks in 2026, already far surpassing the number it has identified in any year since 2020. For comparison, there were 895 cases related to foodborne outbreaks last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Experts say the summer of sickness is the result of chronic underfunding in food safety systems, gaps in federal food policy, and recent cuts to the country\u2019s public health infrastructure by President Donald Trump\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cWhat is happening this summer just demonstrates to me the vulnerabilities in the system\u2014and what happens when you stress the system,\u201d says Barbara Kowalcyk, director of George Washington University\u2019s Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">To understand how<\/span> this summer became so swamped with foodborne illnesses, one needs to understand the scale of the cyclospora outbreak, which \u201cwas absolutely unprecedented,\u201d says Jennifer McEntire, a food microbiologist and founder of the consulting firm Food Safety Strategy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The FDA\u2019s numbers, drawn from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s case count, establish this cyclospora outbreak as the largest the agency has investigated in the US since the 1990s. Yet even this figure undercounts how many people actually got sick, according to the CDC\u2019s own calculations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The FDA\u2019s figures only count illnesses directly linked to a specific outbreak under investigation. So far, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/outbreaks\/07-26\/index.html\" class=\"text link\">67 percent<\/a> of the CDC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/cases\/index.html\" class=\"text link\">17,180 laboratory-confirmed cases<\/a> in the US have been linked to Taylor Farms\u2019 iceberg lettuce; the rest are linked to other outbreaks or one-off infections, which require a full-blown FDA investigation. On top of that, the CDC is aware of at least 11,844 additional cases that have either not been confirmed by a lab test or require further analysis for other reasons.<\/p>\n<figure data-testid=\"IframeEmbed\" class=\"IframeEmbedWrapper-sc-fixZhC gYLetG iframe-embed\"\/>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Previously, cyclospora infections were rare compared to other common foodborne bugs like salmonella and E. coli. The previously obscure pathogen typically causes a few hundred to a few thousand illnesses a year in the US. Because it is\u2014or at least was\u2014relatively uncommon, cyclospora isn\u2019t included in standard panels that test for several types of gastrointestinal disease. That can mask the true size of an outbreak, on top of the many people who may have gotten diarrhea from the parasite but decided not to go to the doctor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Cyclospora is also particularly tricky to get rid of, with its tendency to lodge itself into the crevices and folds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/why-lettuce-always-making-people-sick\/\" class=\"text link\">leafy greens, herbs, and berries<\/a>.
