He then \u201cbegan making a series of public statements regarding his attendance at the event in an attempt to influence the price\u201d of certain contracts, some of which were \u201cfalse or misleading,\u201d per the notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The day before the address, Santos posted, \u201cI&#8217;m going to be there for the State of Union in the gallery, guys\u201d on X. During the speech, he sent a follow-up noting that he was actually at an airport watching the address on television. \u201cFML,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Kalshi\u2019s enforcement team flagged the trades, froze Santos\u2019 account, and referred the case to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the federal agency that oversees prediction markets. This summer, he <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/9276-26\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/9276-26&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cftc.gov\/PressRoom\/PressReleases\/9276-26\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">settled<\/a> with the CFTC for $35,000 over these suspicious trades; a little over $17,500 was returning the profit he made, with an additional $17,500 fine. At the time, his lawyer issued a statement stressing that Santos settled to \u201cput this matter behind him\u201d and that he had done so \u201cwithout admitting the Commission\u2019s allegations, findings or conclusions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Through his legal representative, Santos declined to comment to WIRED. However, on social media, he already <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Georgesantos\/status\/2094424969841148210\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/Georgesantos\/status\/2094424969841148210&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Georgesantos\/status\/2094424969841148210\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weighed in<\/a>, sarcastically thanking Kalshi \u201cfor the lifetime ban from your gambling platform,\u201d adding, \u201cLet\u2019s see how much longer you guys are around for &#x1f48b;,\u201d a nod to the prediction market\u2019s ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/nevada-bans-kalshi-prediction-market\/\" class=\"text link\">battles<\/a> with state authorities over how it is regulated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Once upon a time, Santos had a rosier relationship with the industry; he was once paid for promoting Kalshi\u2019s rival Polymarket, but Polymarket <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/george-santos-polymarket-kalshi-prediction-market-dcc34f4d927d074fe4e1bedeff04b64f\" class=\"text link\">severed ties<\/a> with him once federal regulators began looking into his behavior around February\u2019s State of the Union.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This is far from Santos\u2019 first brush with the law. He was expelled from Congress following an ethics investigation in 2023, and eventually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-edny\/pr\/ex-congressman-george-santos-sentenced-87-months-prison-wire-fraud-and-aggravated\" class=\"text link\">pleaded guilty<\/a> and served time in federal prison for embezzling from campaign donors, lying to Congress, and defrauding campaign contributors. He was released from prison in 2025 after President Trump commuted his sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">According to today\u2019s notice, the prediction market found that Santos successfully influenced the pricing of several markets. Kalshi also issued four additional notices of enforcement actions today, but Santos was the only person penalized who did not settle with the company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t talk to us, and actively dodged us,\u201d Kalshi spokesperson Elisabeth Diana tells WIRED.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the past year, Kalshi has issued a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/kalshi-insider-trading-california-politician-and-youtuber\/\" class=\"text link\">other enforcement actions<\/a> against politicians who it found had broken its rules. In this most <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/robertjdenault\/status\/2094420669513470126\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/robertjdenault\/status\/2094420669513470126&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/robertjdenault\/status\/2094420669513470126\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">recent round<\/a> of enforcement actions, it fined North Carolina Congressional candidate Laurie Buckhout, California gubernatorial candidate Stephen Kloobeck, and Maine gubernatorial candidate Ben Midgley for attempting to trade on contracts related to their races; they are all temporarily suspended.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI bet on myself. Literally. It was a dumb mistake, and as soon as I learned there was an issue, I worked to make it right. Safe to say my career as a Kalshi trader was short-lived,\u201d Buckhout, a retired military officer, told WIRED in an email.
