Now Comes the Hard Part"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">Matte gold, sloped,<\/span> and steering-wheel-free, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-cybercab-is-here\/\" class=\"text link\">Tesla Cybercab<\/a> seems designed to catch the eyes of looky-loos. Now rubberneckers may have more opportunities: Tesla is set to host an event on Thursday at its Austin, Texas, headquarters to debut the Cybercab.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Tesla first rolled out a prototype Cybercab at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-cybercab-is-here\/\" class=\"text link\">flashy event on the Warner Bros. lot<\/a> in 2024. This week\u2019s unveiling will likely mark the vehicle\u2019s official introduction to the electric-auto maker\u2019s small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/new-data-shows-robotaxis-competing-on-price-and-speed\/\" class=\"text link\">ride-hail service<\/a>. It has operated a pilot program in Austin since last summer, and has since expanded to a handful of other cities in Texas and Florida, with permits to launch in Arizona and Nevada. (A \u201crobotaxi\u201d service in the San Francisco Bay Area is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-robotaxi-san-francisco-bay-area\/\" class=\"text link\">not legally permitted to operate<\/a> without drivers behind the wheel.) Before the event, Tesla added 51 Cybercabs to its fleet of vehicles registered to operate in Texas (263 Model Ys are also registered).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThe streets won&#8217;t be the same anymore,\u201d Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla\u2019s head of AI software, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aelluswamy\/status\/2093575830480077005\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/aelluswamy\/status\/2093575830480077005&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aelluswamy\/status\/2093575830480077005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted last month<\/a> on X. When an X user asked whether the Cybercabs would \u201cflood Austin,\u201d Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with his characteristic moth-to-the-flame tendencies toward hyperbole, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2093976014409875963\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2093976014409875963&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/2093976014409875963\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">responded<\/a> with a simple \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Details on the event are still scant, and the basic business model for the Cybercab is in question\u2014are the vehicles just for ride-hail operations, or meant to be sold to individual drivers? States regulate autonomous vehicles, and some tightly control permits and data collection. However, Musk still insisted this year that Tesla will sell Cybercabs directly to consumers before the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Either way, the physical Cybercab slated to be shown off in Austin on Thursday may be the easiest lift in Tesla\u2019s deeply ambitious plan to shift from a company that builds cars to one entirely focused on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/autonomous-vehicles\/\" class=\"text link\">autonomous vehicles<\/a> and robotics. Manufacturing a car isn\u2019t easy. But neither is running a functional autonomous vehicle service, nor building the software to power it. Tesla hasn\u2019t yet proven that it can do either at scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cLonger term, the software is the most important piece,\u201d says Seth Goldstein, a senior equity analyst for Morningstar who follows Tesla. \u201cThis is a very important step, to put the Cybercab in production, but ultimately, it only matters if the software can allow a car to navigate safely.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Musk has promised for nearly a decade that the Teslas sold to everyday consumers are just a software update away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/guide-self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">driverless capabilities<\/a>, but that has yet to come true. (Musk admitted earlier this year that some vehicles will need a hardware upgrade to get the capability.) The company\u2019s critical thesis is that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/self-driving-cars\/\" class=\"text link\">car can drive<\/a> on complicated, chaotic public roads with only inexpensive cameras, which could allow it to deploy self-driving robots much more cheaply than the competition. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/waymo\/\" class=\"text link\">Waymo<\/a>, the US industry leader, took a direct swipe at Tesla last month, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2026\/08\/10ailessons\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2026\/08\/10ailessons\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2026\/08\/10ailessons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">writing<\/a> in a blog post that \u201ccameras are incredible, but they aren\u2019t enough.\u201d Waymo\u2019s more expensive setup uses lidar and radar along with cameras.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Tesla\u2019s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) product, available to drivers for a $99 monthly fee, currently does many driving tasks, including changing lanes and stopping at red lights. But the company warns in its manuals that drivers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-fatal-tesla-crash-in-texas-sets-up-a-legal-showdown\/\" class=\"text link\">must pay attention<\/a> and be ready to intervene at all times. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the US\u2019s top auto safety regulator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tesla-autopilot-risky-deaths-crashes-nhtsa-investigation\/\" class=\"text link\">opened an investigation<\/a> into crashes involving FSD in 2024 following concerns that the system falters in situations with poor visibility.
