Though AI has seeped into every step of the job hunt<\/a> for both applicants and recruiters, it has taken time to catch on in interviews. Voice AI is infamously tricky to pull off,<\/a> as agents get tripped up by accents or \u201cums.\u201d Behavior that would be second nature to a human\u2014like not interrupting a candidate\u2014turns into a \u201cvery, very difficult engineering problem,\u201d according to Ophir Samson, the head of voice AI at recruitment platform Greenhouse. But recruiters, overwhelmed with the glut of applications, have increasingly turned to voice AI tools to screen candidates, with 63 percent of job seekers reporting they\u2019ve encountered an AI interview, according to Greenhouse.<\/p>\n

As recruiters turned to AI, so did applicants. Candidates using AI in the interview process has become so common that AI recruitment startups like Ribbon promise to help identify \u201coverly scripted, AI-assisted, or coached\u201d responses\u2014just like those in Christopher\u2019s experiment.<\/p>\n

Now there are rumblings that bot-on-bot interviews aren\u2019t duplicitous but a preview of things to come. In many ways, it\u2019s the \u201cnext logical stage,\u201d Mark Monaghan, vice president of organizational development at call center company IQor, tells WIRED.<\/p>\n

That doesn\u2019t mean he\u2019s entirely happy about it. In Christopher\u2019s case, Monaghan believes, the use of AI was more than justified.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re going to send a bot to me,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019ll send a bot to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his fifth interview with no follow-up, Christopher decided to apply for one more Everforth Apex job. Perhaps, Christopher thought, the problem wasn\u2019t AI. Maybe it was him. Maybe if Riley were able to speak to the company\u2019s dream candidate, things would go differently. So he created a fake candidate, whom he called Don Dickner, packing a r\u00e9sum\u00e9 to the brim with qualifications pulled from an open job posting.<\/p>\n

After Christopher submitted the application, Riley immediately reached out. This time, the virtual recruiter spoke with ChatGPT\u2014posing as Dickner\u2014for 23 minutes. They discussed \u201csustainable operational improvement,\u201d protecting \u201ccustomer experience under volume pressure,\u201d and refusing to let \u201ctribal knowledge drift.\u201d ChatGPT had an answer for every question, and a personal anecdote for every qualification. As the interview wrapped up, ChatGPT said it had a \u201cfew more questions I\u2019d like answered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI appreciate it,\u201d Riley responded. \u201cUpon carefully reviewing your application, we will assess your qualifications for the position. Should you meet our criteria, a recruiter from Everforth Apex will reach out to schedule a brief conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christopher never heard from Riley again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
