{"id":6424,"date":"2026-09-03T06:37:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-03T06:37:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6424"},"modified":"2026-09-03T06:37:56","modified_gmt":"2026-09-03T06:37:56","slug":"2026-supersized-el-nino-impacts-worsen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6424","title":{"rendered":"The 2026 El Ni\u00f1o Is Being \u2018Supersized\u2019 as Impacts Worsen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The world\u2019s leading weather organization is sounding the alarm about this year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-el-nino-means-weather-water-global-economy\/\" class=\"text link\">super El Ni\u00f1o<\/a>, issuing its most certain forecast in the history of the organization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In an update issued early Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization predicted a \u201cnearly 100% likelihood\u201d that the El Ni\u00f1o will last through February. The strong language from the World Meteorological Organization\u2014the United Nations\u2019 weather and climate agency\u2014underlies just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/2026-el-nino-the-strongest-in-150-years\/\" class=\"text link\">how historic this El Ni\u00f1o<\/a> is shaping up to be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is the first time that a WMO El Ni\u00f1o\/La Ni\u00f1a Update has been so unequivocal,\u201d the agency says, noting that certainty reflects \u201cthe strong agreement within WMO\u2019s extensive network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">El Ni\u00f1o is a naturally occurring weather phenomenon defined by warmer-than-normal ocean temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific, a pattern that disrupts weather patterns around the world. Scientists have been warning since the start of the year that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/super-el-nino-turns-worlds-weather-upside-down\/\" class=\"text link\">particularly strong El<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/super-el-nino-turns-worlds-weather-upside-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">Ni\u00f1o<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/super-el-nino-turns-worlds-weather-upside-down\/\" class=\"text link\">was<\/a> set to develop. The latest forecasts indicate it will be the strongest on record by a wide margin, and impacts are already being felt throughout the world\u2014and they\u2019re likely to intensify in the coming months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cEl Ni\u00f1o is being supersized before our eyes,\u201d UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres said in a statement. \u201cThe science leaves no room for doubt: The planet is in uncharted waters, and those waters are heating up. Sea surface temperatures are rising, temperatures keep climbing, and the world is in the danger zone of extreme weather.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In addition to affecting regional weather, El Ni\u00f1o also tends to bump up the global average temperature by roughly 0.1 to 0.2 degrees Celsius (0.2 to 0.4 degrees Fahrenheit) by releasing heat into the atmosphere. But this year\u2019s iteration could provide an even bigger boost. The intensity of this El Ni\u00f1o means this year is likely to be the hottest on record; because it takes a while for the added heat to work through the climate system, 2027 is forecast to be even hotter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">This extra warming is a red alert when compounded on top of the warming caused by manmade climate change. The UN warned in a <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/unep-world-set-cross-15degc-global-warming-can-still-limit-adapt-and\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/unep-world-set-cross-15degc-global-warming-can-still-limit-adapt-and&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/unep-world-set-cross-15degc-global-warming-can-still-limit-adapt-and\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">separate report issued this week<\/a> that the world will likely cross 1.5 degrees C of warming over the next few years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, says this El Ni\u00f1o will be so big, \u201cwith consequences that are so large, I\u2019m not sure we fully understand them.\u201d The intensity of the El Ni\u00f1o, Swain says, means that it may cause unexpected and extreme weather, and he cautions against making certain predictions about what, exactly, is going to happen over the next year. But the impacts, he says, will almost certainly be massive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThis is probably one of the larger, if not the largest, climate events\u2014aside from long-term warming, which really isn&#8217;t a singular event\u2014that anybody alive is potentially ever experiencing,\u201d he says. \u201cThat&#8217;s a very big deal. And I think there\u2019s certainly going to be dramatic outcomes from this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While the El Ni\u00f1o won\u2019t reach its full strength for another few months, the world has already seen some impacts: The US just lived through the hottest summer on record, and the heat was almost certainly juiced up by El Ni\u00f1o. Regions that are typically dry during El Ni\u00f1o have also seen drought emerge.
