The US National Labor Relations Board counted ballots on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Three Wikimedia employees tell WIRED they will now have a mechanism to challenge management as the organization faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wikipedias-existential-threats-have-never-been-greater\/\" class=\"text link\">growing competition<\/a> from AI chatbots and a drop in volunteer editors. The 25-year-old, San Francisco-based foundation employs nearly 700 people across 39 countries, most of them working remotely. The contingent joining the union includes employees in functions such as software engineering, finance, communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Lauren de Lench, who has been a lead technical program manager at the Wikimedia Foundation since 2021, says she voted to unionize because she had seen too many colleagues decline to speak up during internal meetings out of fear of retaliation for raising issues or proposing far-out ideas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI want us to be loud and debate freely up and down the organizational chart because that\u2019s how we move quickly, address challenges, and come up with the best collective solutions,\u201d de Lench says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The foundation said in <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/news\/2026\/09\/03\/us-staff-unionization-vote\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/news\/2026\/09\/03\/us-staff-unionization-vote\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/wikimediafoundation.org\/news\/2026\/09\/03\/us-staff-unionization-vote\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">an unsigned blog post on Thursday<\/a> that it will \u201capproach this next phase constructively, lawfully, and with care for the staff whose work makes it possible for us to serve people everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Concerns about pay and benefits were not major motivators for the union drive, according to Wikimedia employees. Instead, they say, frustration over how the organization explained several hiring and firing decisions in the past year provided the final push the union needed to win the vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That included when the foundation chose to <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost\/2026-06-21\/Technology_report\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost\/2026-06-21\/Technology_report&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost\/2026-06-21\/Technology_report\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">disband a team<\/a> responsible for developing tools volunteer editors use to make additions to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects, such as the image library known as Commons. In a separate move, management removed France from a list of approved hiring locations for product and technology roles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In a sign of solidarity, some volunteer Wikipedia editors <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Organized_Labour\/2026_Online_Campaign\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Organized_Labour\/2026_Online_Campaign&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Organized_Labour\/2026_Online_Campaign\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">organized a campaign<\/a> to improve entries about labor unions and related topics this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI want to get to a place of mutual trust and there is a big gap,\u201d de Lench says. \u201cThere are pockets within the foundation where it\u2019s healthy, and I want everyone to have that relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In an organization-wide email seen by WIRED, Wikimedia Foundation CEO Bernadette Meehan called unionization the start of a new chapter that she was \u201coptimistic\u201d about. \u201cThe concerns many of you shared about management practices, organizational planning, staff departures, and making facts clear and available matter as much as ever, and we will continue to work together to make meaningful improvements or all staff,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">Growing Pains<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Wikimedia workers have discussed unionizing off and on for a decade, but they had never gotten as far as holding an election before. Workers say momentum for the organizing effort began picking up after the foundation grew its workforce by hundreds of people during the Covid pandemic, introducing bureaucracy that left some rank-and-file employees feeling powerless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cManagement has had to walk back certain decisions,\u201d says Nico Aramayo, a senior paralegal who joined the Wikimedia Foundation during the expansion phase. \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be better if we could all have a seat at the table?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The foundation is generally in a strong financial position, with an annual budget of more than $200 million and net assets of around $300 million and growing.
