The spread of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/goose-a-new-gay-dating-app-appears-to-be-a-psyop\/\" class=\"text link\">AI-generated fake accounts<\/a> has become a rising concern for dating apps, as things like <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-rise-of-ai-chatfishing-in-online-dating-poses-a-modern-turing-test\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-rise-of-ai-chatfishing-in-online-dating-poses-a-modern-turing-test\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/the-rise-of-ai-chatfishing-in-online-dating-poses-a-modern-turing-test\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chatfishing<\/a> and voice cloning have gotten more widespread across the industry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Among current online daters in the US, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/us.norton.com\/blog\/research\/romance-scams-insights-report-2026\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/us.norton.com\/blog\/research\/romance-scams-insights-report-2026&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/us.norton.com\/blog\/research\/romance-scams-insights-report-2026\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nearly half<\/a> have been targeted by a dating scam, with US romance scams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/loneliness-epidemic-romance-scams-security-crisis\/\" class=\"text link\">surpassing $4 billion<\/a> between 2015 and 2025, according to the FBI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The issue has forced just about every dating platform to adopt stricter authentication tools to ward off scammers. More and more, apps are asking that you surrender your most unique attribute in order to ensure that you\u2019re a real person: your face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/idscan.net\/blog\/which-dating-apps-have-identity-verification\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/idscan.net\/blog\/which-dating-apps-have-identity-verification\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/idscan.net\/blog\/which-dating-apps-have-identity-verification\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than a dozen<\/a> major dating apps and sites use face recognition to verify users, often relying on liveness checks, 3D authentication, video selfies, or biometric ID to demonstrate humanness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To combat the issue, Tinder launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tinder-launches-mandatory-facial-verification-to-weed-out-bots-and-scammers\/\" class=\"text link\">mandatory face-screening<\/a> tool Face Check for new members in October 2025. \u201cIt\u2019s not a feature. It\u2019s a statement about what human connection online should require,\u201d Yoel Roth, head of trust and safety for Match Group, which owns Tinder, said to WIRED in an email. Match Group tells WIRED that it is also starting to require Face Check for existing users in several of Tinder\u2019s core markets, including the US and UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">As face verification slowly transforms into a prerequisite for participation across the industry, the collective drive to combat bad actors has created a necessary and equally concerning new standard where \u201c<a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/announcements\/tinder-verification-proof-of-human-dating\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/announcements\/tinder-verification-proof-of-human-dating&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/announcements\/tinder-verification-proof-of-human-dating\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">proof of human<\/a>\u201d profiles may soon be the norm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Underpinning the shift, however, is a grim irony: In attempting to solve the problem of knowing whether someone is real, Big Dating is potentially creating more opportunities for privacy and security risks by forcing users to give up biometric data, while also legitimizing a culture of surveillance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One company pushing for the use of ID-verification tech in dating apps is Tools for Humanity. The AI company created World ID, an iris-scanning biometric verification system, and partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/gazing-into-sam-altmans-orb-now-proves-youre-human-on-tinder\/\" class=\"text link\">Tinder<\/a> in April, though it\u2019s still optional for users. The most distinct feature about World ID is that confirmed users receive a \u201cverified human\u201d badge on the app after undergoing the process, which requires them to scan the colored part of their eye using the company\u2019s orb device. They are given an identification number as their official World ID.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cIn the near future, any dating app, like most online platforms in general, will need some sort of proof-of-human system like this,\u201d says Tiago Sada, chief product officer at Tools for Humanity, adding that the way the majority of dating platforms handle verification is \u201csuper creepy, because you have to give your personal data to every single app that you want to use.\u201d As stipulated by <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/how-to\/what-happens-to-your-data-after-you-verify-your-world-id-at-an-orb\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/how-to\/what-happens-to-your-data-after-you-verify-your-world-id-at-an-orb&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/world.org\/blog\/how-to\/what-happens-to-your-data-after-you-verify-your-world-id-at-an-orb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">World\u2019s policy<\/a>, the orb does not share or retain any data; it is able to verify users without ever sending their data to a server. Once your image is confirmed, the orb sends the coded image to your phone before permanently deleting it, the company claims.
