The products go on sale soon after, usually ranging from a base model to more premium and more expensive Pro models. But this year will likely be different\u2014not just because the company has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/tim-cook-stepping-down-ceo-apple-john-ternus\/\" class=\"text link\">brand-new CEO<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Apple\u2019s <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-events\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-events\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/apple-events\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iPhone event<\/a> will be held on September 9 at 10 am Pacific (1 pm Eastern), <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/in-the-loop\/2026\/08\/surprise-and-shine\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/in-the-loop\/2026\/08\/surprise-and-shine\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/newsroom\/in-the-loop\/2026\/08\/surprise-and-shine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">announced last week<\/a> with the title \u201cSurprise and Shine!\u201d If you tune into the livestream, expect the announcement of an iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and, if all the rumors and widely held analyst expectations are true, the first look at an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-folding-iphone-right-move-at-the-right-time\/\" class=\"text link\">Apple foldable device<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Based on leaks and the ongoing tech rumor mill and its decent track record for figuring these things out, Apple is expected to prioritize its more expensive, premium devices this year and hold off on announcing its base model iPhone 18. That cheaper model is rumored to launch in the spring of 2027, potentially alongside an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/apple-iphone-17e\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone 18e<\/a> and maybe a second-generation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/apple-iphone-air\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone Air<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Why the drastic change in strategy? It may be due to the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/solving-the-pc-memory-crisis\/\" class=\"text link\">memory shortage<\/a>, which has made just about everything <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/we-are-in-the-knockout-round-of-price-increases-for-consumer-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">more expensive<\/a>. Apple hasn\u2019t been spared. In June, former Apple CEO Tim Cook <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/apple-price-increases-memory-supply-199845b1\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/apple-price-increases-memory-supply-199845b1&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/apple-price-increases-memory-supply-199845b1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acknowledged<\/a> that Apple would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/buying-a-used-iphone-makes-more-sense-than-ever\/\" class=\"text link\">raise product prices<\/a> to keep up with manufacturing costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cOur assumption is that they&#8217;re going to be launching three models in the fall, the premium side of the models of the 18 series,\u201d says <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/my.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=PRF004267\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/my.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=PRF004267&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/my.idc.com\/getdoc.jsp?containerId=PRF004267\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nabila Popal<\/a>, a senior director of data and analytics at IDC. \u201cThen the mid\/budget devices will be launched in the spring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Popal says it&#8217;s a smart strategic move because Apple is aiming to spread out its revenue between a usually very strong fourth quarter and a typically much weaker spring quarter the following year. Apple\u2019s portfolio has also expanded, and the iPhone Pro and Pro Max lineup are more enticing for people already prepared to spend the money on a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/iphone\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">When components become more expensive, companies have three real options: Eat the costs, raise prices, or, as Apple seems to be doing, lean into it. By moving its cheaper options to a later date, Apple can drum up excitement for its bigger, better, pricier offerings. When it charges more for those, it is likely to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/no-longer-an-iphone-under-500-does-it-matter\/\" class=\"text link\">less off-putting<\/a> than making a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/best-cheap-phones\/\" class=\"text link\">cheap phone<\/a> even more expensive. It\u2019s part of a \u201cpremiumization\u201d of devices, as Popal calls it, that Apple hopes to leverage and build hype for its pricier options.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronics.org\/meet-shawn-dubravac-ipcs-chief-economist\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Shawn DuBravac<\/a>, chief economist at the Global Electronics Association, tells WIRED he is optimistic about what these kinds of rising prices ultimately mean for customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cThroughout the history of time, the deflationary pressures of technology have always flowed to the consumer,\u201d DuBravac says. \u201cI&#8217;m confident that will be the case again. It just will take some time for the markets to solidify.\u201d In other words, new technologies launch with a high price, but manufacturing efficiencies and competition inevitably drive costs down for consumers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That may not be the case anytime soon for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/gallery\/best-folding-phones\/\" class=\"text link\">folding phones<\/a>, which are seeing higher prices than ever. Samsung\u2019s entire 2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/samsung-galaxy-z-fold8-and-z-fold8-ultra\/\" class=\"text link\">Galaxy Z folding<\/a> smartphone range saw price increases, as did Google\u2019s new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/review\/google-pixel-11-pro-fold\/\" class=\"text link\">Pixel 11 Pro Fold<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/motorola-razr-2026-folding-phones\/\" class=\"text link\">Motorola\u2019s Razr 2026 models<\/a>. Apple\u2019s folding iPhone is rumored to cost around $2,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">To help mitigate those high costs, Apple is turning to financing options and trade-in programs. In July, the company launched an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-products-are-all-just-subscription-services-now\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone leasing<\/a> program that lets people pay a monthly fee to rent the newest iPhones, then swap them out when a new device releases. The program will undoubtedly help more people afford the newest devices, but ownership advocates have criticized it, saying it keeps you from truly owning and managing your device.
