A price hike from the supply-chain powerhouse would be the clearest sign yet that soaring memory costs have become unavoidable \u2014 with no end to the memory crunch in sight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Call it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/08\/11\/chips-memory-inflation-ai\">chipflation<\/a>\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/979996\/best-laptops-students-middle-high-school\">RAMageddon<\/a>.\u201d The shortage is reversing a decades-long decline in memory costs that helped make consumer electronics more powerful without making them dramatically more expensive. The terms \u201cmemory prices\u201d and \u201cmemory shortage\u201d appeared in 473 company transcripts last quarter, according to data provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alpha-sense.com\">AlphaSense<\/a>. The entire industry is seemingly working on the problem. And yet, we\u2019re years away from seeing it fixed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The common wisdom is that AI is at fault: The technology isn\u2019t just contributing to higher energy prices and layoffs; it\u2019s also helping drive up the cost of everything from smartphones to game consoles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">But the shortage was brewing well before ChatGPT took off \u2014 and was then amplified by AI\u2019s unending hunger for RAM. The current market is the product of a complicated and very profitable reshuffling of the memory industry within a system that was already failing to keep up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe need to build more wafer capacity,\u201d Manish Bhatia, president and COO of Micron \u2014 one of the three largest memory manufacturers \u2014 told <em>The Verge<\/em>. \u201c[It\u2019s] a very different challenge for the industry than it had been for many years before, where technology alone was able to keep up with the demand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div style=\"position:relative\">\n<div class=\"_1044qizj\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"background-image:none\" _19wv7tc1\">For years, memory manufacturers could increase production by fitting more chips onto each wafer. But those gains were shrinking and taking longer to achieve. In 2021, even as pandemic-era electronics demand surged, Micron concluded that the problem was more fundamental: Technological advances alone would no longer create enough capacity to keep pace with long-term demand. Manufacturers would have to process more wafers \u2014 and build enormous new facilities to do it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Then the memory business collapsed. Pandemic-era purchases of computers, tablets, and phones had pulled demand forward; consumer spending weakened, and manufacturers were left with excess inventory. They lost money and slowed their expansion plans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">By the time the market began recovering, generative AI had unleashed a wave of demand far larger and more memory-intensive than manufacturers had ever anticipated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The memory business is also extraordinarily concentrated. Three manufacturers account for about 90 percent of the market, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/counterpointresearch.com\/en\">Counterpoint<\/a>, leaving the world dependent on a handful of companies to divide limited capacity between AI infrastructure and consumer devices. Counterpoint estimates that Samsung controlled 39 percent of the memory market in the second quarter of 2026, followed by SK Hynix at 26 percent and Micron at 25 percent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The memory inside your phone or computer broadly falls into two buckets. DRAM, or dynamic random-access memory, temporarily holds the information a device needs while opening apps, loading webpages, or running software. NAND flash memory provides longer-term storage for things like photos and files.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">\u201cIt\u2019s not as simple as saying data centers are consuming RAM. The RAM is not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Inside AI data centers, specialized processors rely heavily on a form of DRAM called high-bandwidth memory, or HBM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cIt\u2019s not as simple as saying data centers are consuming RAM,\u201d David Naranjo, associate director at Counterpoint, told <em>The Verge<\/em>. \u201cThe RAM is not the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">By stacking memory chips together and using advanced connections and packaging, HBM can move enormous quantities of data to and from those processors much faster and more efficiently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">It\u2019s more difficult to produce, but also more lucrative to sell. Deep-pocketed AI chipmakers like Nvidia and AMD and tech giants like Meta and Microsoft have an insatiable need for it to power their AI systems \u2014 and are more than happy to pay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">HBM also consumes significantly more manufacturing capacity than conventional DRAM. Memory chips are made many at a time on large, circular silicon wafers. Because a finished HBM product stacks multiple, larger chips together, it requires considerably more silicon. Micron estimates that producing a given amount of HBM requires roughly three times as many wafers as producing the same amount of conventional DRAM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The incentives increasingly favor AI. Rather than guessing how many phones or laptops will sell a year from now, memory makers can lock in multiyear commitments from some of the world\u2019s richest companies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe have been engaging in discussions with customers, prioritizing those who can guarantee committed future captive demand,\u201d Jaejune Kim, Samsung\u2019s executive vice president of memory, said on the company\u2019s last earnings call.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">AI is also increasing demand for conventional DRAM. Phone and PC makers want to run smaller AI models directly on their devices, requiring more sophisticated conventional memory \u2014 and more of it. Future models may need substantially more memory than their predecessors to support those capabilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">\u201cThe three big memory guys, they\u2019re just basically allocating the capacity that they have to these companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cAs AI spreads across various services such as search, coding, and productivity tools, the scope of demand is widening from a memory perspective,\u201d said Song Hyun-jong, president of SK Hynix, another of the big three memory manufacturers, on the company\u2019s most recent earnings call. \u201cWe are witnessing a structural shift in demand where both AI memory and conventional memory are growing together.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Samsung and Micron have both said they remain committed to conventional DRAM. Micron\u2019s Bhatia told <em>The Verge<\/em> that it still accounts for most of the company\u2019s wafer capacity. But limited supply, surging demand, and AI customers willing to make long-term commitments have made it extraordinarily lucrative to cede space to HBM.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">SK Hynix posted a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/livecoverage\/fed-meeting-warsh-interest-rate-07-29-2026\/card\/sk-hynix-proves-that-sometimes-a-76-profit-margin-isn-t-enough-eBCbr3ciCr1YkzJvU2uP\">76 percent operating margin<\/a> last quarter, up from 41 percent a year earlier, while Micron\u2019s adjusted gross margin hit a record <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/micron-earnings-stock-price-50dff0cf\">85 percent<\/a>. Samsung\u2019s semiconductor profits, meanwhile, jumped roughly 250-fold from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cIt\u2019s more profitable,\u201d Naranjo said. \u201cThe three big memory guys, they\u2019re just basically allocating the capacity that they have to these companies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Counterpoint estimates that DRAM prices for smartphones increased roughly 56 percent in the first quarter of 2026 compared to a quarter earlier, and grew around 83 percent in the second quarter. For 16GB of DRAM for a smartphone, Counterpoint estimates that it cost roughly $42 in the second quarter of 2025 and about $181 a year later \u2014 an increase of more than 300 percent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Those aren\u2019t necessarily Apple\u2019s prices \u2014 few companies have more leverage with suppliers \u2014 but the figures show how dramatically the component costs of building a high-end phone have changed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac1 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div style=\"position:relative\">\n<div class=\"_1044qizj\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div style=\"background-image:none\" class=\"duet--media--content-warning _1k8kvzd0\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--image-gallery-image _1pegheu0\" The problem is that it takes years to accomplish \u2014 even if you\u2019re working fast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Micron is currently demonstrating just how much work \u201cmore\u201d entails.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In July, the company <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.micron.com\/news\/press-release\/2026\/Micron-Accelerates-U-S--Investments-Pours-First-Concrete-at-New-York-Fab\/default.aspx\">poured the first concrete<\/a> for its planned manufacturing complex near Syracuse in upstate New York. Once completed, the site will contain 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom space, making it the largest semiconductor manufacturing site in US history by that measure \u2014 and Micron\u2019s largest facility anywhere in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Those cleanrooms where the chips are made will occupy only a fraction of the entire build, which is roughly the size of 350 football fields.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cBy the time we\u2019re done, we\u2019ll have built probably 15 to 20 million actual square feet of building space to support the 2.4 million square feet of cleanroom,\u201d Bhatia told <em>The Verge<\/em>. In one of Micron\u2019s fab designs, the cleanroom occupies just one floor of a five-story building.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">Micron doesn\u2019t expect meaningful output until 2030<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The remaining space will house a vast network of water-treatment, power, air-handling, and utility-distribution systems needed to keep it running.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Even though Micron reached the concrete pour ahead of schedule, it still took more than two years. The company began permitting after its CHIPS Act grant for New York was confirmed in March 2024, broke ground in January 2026, and poured concrete about six months later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The physical construction unfolds in three broad stages. Preparing the ground can take six to nine months, Bhatia said. Building the concrete structure and facade can require another 18 months. But the most complicated stage comes after the building is standing: installing the vast network of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and piping systems required to operate a semiconductor fab.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Those systems must turn an enormous industrial building into an environment where a single microscopic particle doesn\u2019t land in the wrong place and ruin a chip.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Bhatia offered a sense of the precision required:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cImagine trying to build all of New York state and not have any ants anywhere in the entire state,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do on every one of these wafers, and we do it over and over again.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Completing the building still doesn\u2019t produce memory. Micron expects to activate and test essential systems like power, water, and ventilation at the end of 2028, then spend 2029 moving in manufacturing equipment and beginning pilot production. The company doesn\u2019t expect meaningful output until 2030. Even on an accelerated timeline, the journey from permitting to production will have taken roughly six years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The company\u2019s new Idaho fab is further along and is expected to begin wafer output in mid-2027.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Micron is spending enormous amounts to move the process along more quickly, roughly doubling its capital expenditure from a year earlier to exceed $25 billion this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Even with that investment, Micron can\u2019t identify a clear point at which supply will catch up because demand continues to grow almost as quickly as manufacturers can expand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cWe\u2019ve said that right now it\u2019ll be beyond 2027, and we don\u2019t see when it closes just because demand continues to grow so fast,\u201d Bhatia said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Counterpoint doesn\u2019t expect capacity to catch up with demand until late 2027 or early 2028 in the best-case scenario. The market data firm IDC similarly expects the shortage to last through 2027 and well into early 2028 before there is meaningful relief.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement They can raise prices. They can make fewer devices. They can put less memory in them. Or they can focus on more expensive devices with enough profit margin to absorb the added cost.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Citing soaring memory costs, Microsoft recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/games\/957042\/xbox-price-increase-memory-shortage\">raised Xbox prices by another $100 to $150<\/a>, leaving some models as much as $300 more expensive than at launch. Microsoft also raised the price of some Surface Pro laptops and tablets by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/911322\/microsoft-surface-price-increase-ram\">$500 over their original starting price<\/a>. Meta, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/912921\/meta-quest-3-3s-vr-price-hike-ram-memory-shortage\">added $100<\/a> to the cost of its Quest 3 headset.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Apple is perhaps the most revealing test case because it should be among the companies best equipped to withstand the shortage. Its scale gives it extraordinary leverage with suppliers, and its customers have historically proved willing to pay premium prices. Yet Apple has already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/tech\/952162\/apple-price-increase-ram-shortage\">raised prices<\/a> across its lineup of Macs and iPads.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Now attention is turning to the iPhone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Rather than releasing its full lineup at once this fall, Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max alongside its first foldable iPhone, while holding the standard iPhone 18 and refreshed Air until spring 2027, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-06-17\/apple-prepares-second-generation-iphone-air-for-spring-2027\"><em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--block-placement _1xorkac2 _1xorkac0 duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote c39lj10\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup c39lj12 _19wv7tc9\">Tim Cook described memory pricing as a \u201c100-year flood\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">That leaves Apple\u2019s fall lineup concentrated heavily at the most expensive end of the market \u2014 exactly where it has the most room to protect its margins. Counterpoint\u2019s supply-chain tracking shows Apple preparing roughly 10 percent more iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units for September through December than it allocated to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max during the same period last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">On Apple\u2019s last earnings call, the company forecast slower growth due partly to worsening supply constraints, including for memory chips, and said higher memory costs had directly reduced its gross margin. Then-CEO Tim Cook described memory pricing as a \u201c100-year flood,\u201d citing \u201cexponential increases\u201d that had caused Apple to raise prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The iPhone 18 Pro could start at $1,299, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/personal-tech\/apple-iphone-price-increase-e846d737\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>\u2019s calculation<\/a> based on estimates from TechInsights that factor in component costs and attempt to minimize margin reductions. That would be $200 more than the iPhone 17 Pro. Samsung and Google have each raised the starting prices of some new phones by $100 this year, though several also come with more storage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Apple may be better positioned than most companies to pull off higher prices. Its installed base, tightly integrated ecosystem, and loyal customers make its phones behave more like luxury goods than interchangeable electronics. The company has already gained market share by keeping its prices steady while lower-end competitors raised theirs. In places like <a href=\"https:\/\/sherwood.news\/tech\/apple-is-on-its-way-to-becoming-the-biggest-smartphone-seller-in-china\/\">China<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest smartphone market, it almost became common sense to opt for a premium iPhone when lower-cost alternatives were selling for nearly as much.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">For other manufacturers, the options are worse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Counterpoint and IDC are already seeing smartphone companies reduce expected shipments while shifting toward more expensive models. But because new facilities take years to build, that spending won\u2019t bring immediate relief.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">SK Hynix is investing 600 trillion won in its <a href=\"https:\/\/news.skhynix.com\/en\/fact-05\">Yongin Semiconductor Cluster<\/a>, a massive complex south of Seoul first announced in 2019, and has accelerated its target for completion from 2045 to 2033. The company says it will double its capacity within five years but still expects demand to outpace supply through 2030.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Samsung and SK Hynix also plan to invest a combined 800 trillion won, or about $588 billion, in four new memory-chip factories in southwestern South Korea, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/samsung-sk-hynix-to-spend-520-billion-on-chip-plants-in-south-korea-7d50aab2?utm_source=chatgpt.com\"><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>. Micron\u2019s New York and Idaho projects are part of the more than $250 billion it says it will spend on US manufacturing and research through 2035.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">A potentially important fourth player is also emerging in China. CXMT is building additional fabs, though its technology isn\u2019t yet considered as advanced as that of Samsung, SK Hynix, or Micron. Apple is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/apple-tests-chinese-memory-chips-as-supply-squeeze-bites-d292bb97\">testing<\/a> CXMT chips but would need approval from the Trump administration to do business with the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">The other possibility is that supply won\u2019t have to catch up because demand will collapse first. If the AI investment bubble bursts, memory manufacturers could suddenly find themselves facing very different economics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">For now, that remains hypothetical. The long-term contracts AI companies have signed with memory suppliers make the immediate future easier to predict.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201c2027 is pretty locked and loaded,\u201d Naranjo said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Counterpoint and IDC expect price increases to slow from the breathtaking pace of the past year to single or low double digits. But slower increases aren\u2019t the same as falling prices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">\u201cNot to say prices will come down to 2025 levels, but the price increases will stabilize at a new normal,\u201d Nabila Popal, a senior director at IDC, told <em>The Verge<\/em>. That new normal is \u201cat least triple what they used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">New fabs still take years to come online, while AI data centers and increasingly sophisticated consumer devices continue to require more memory. And manufacturers have little economic incentive to prioritize cheaper consumer electronics over customers willing to pay handsomely and commit years in advance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Naranjo\u2019s forecast was blunt.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1
