Some Academics Are Crying Foul"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span class=\"lead-in-text-callout\">OpenAI said today<\/span> that it has found an AI-generated solution to one of the biggest problems in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-new-ai-math-ai-startup-just-cracked-4-previously-unsolved-problems\/\" class=\"text link\">mathematics<\/a>\u2014a 200-year-old equation that describes the natural behavior of fluids like water and air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The announcement appears to demonstrate the stunning power for AI to advance mathematics. But it has been marred by claims from another mathematician, Tristan Buckmaster, who says that OpenAI rushed ahead to solve the problem after learning of his and another mathematician\u2019s progress on the problem, and also then tried to influence who got credit for the work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The proof concerns the Navier-Stokes equation, one of the unsolved problems in the <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.claymath.org\/millennium\/navier-stokes-equation\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.claymath.org\/millennium\/navier-stokes-equation\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.claymath.org\/millennium\/navier-stokes-equation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Clay Millennium prizes<\/a>, which are each worth $1 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Sebastien Bubeck, a mathematician and AI researcher at OpenAI, said in a press briefing that the company began training a new AI model with advanced mathematical capabilities on August 28.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">After reading rumors that Anthropic was making progress toward solving Navier-Stokes, Bubeck said the company decided to dedicate more resources to tackling the problem. The company had more than 1,000 agents tackle the problem over more than 50 hours before discovering that it had <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/navier-stokes-solution\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">come up with a solution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI thought there must be a mistake somewhere,\u201d Bubeck said. \u201cAnd on Sunday morning we had the final solution, Lean-formalized and everything.\u201d (Lean is a programming language that can be used to formalize mathematical proofs.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI noted that solving this problem required using considerably more computing power than it had previously spent on solving mathematical problems. The amount required cost \u201cin the millions of dollars,\u201d said Mark Chen, head of research at OpenAI.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">On Monday, Buckmaster, a mathematician at NYU, and Levent Alp\u00f6ge, a researcher at Anthropic, <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@tristanbuckmaster\/117233413705701198\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@tristanbuckmaster\/117233413705701198&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/mastodon.social\/@tristanbuckmaster\/117233413705701198\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">posted documents<\/a> claiming key advances in an area relevant to the Navier-Stokes problem. The pair says they used several AI models, including Claude and Codex, to complete their work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Buckmaster also posted <a href=\"https:\/\/cims.nyu.edu\/~tristanb\/statement.pdf\" class=\"text link\">a statement claiming that,<\/a> last week, he learned that OpenAI had become aware of his and Alp\u00f6ge\u2019s work and had started putting significant resources toward the problem. Buckmaster claims that he asked OpenAI leaders about whether the company had accessed the pair\u2019s Codex logs. He says he was told the model \u201cdidn\u2019t look up user data\u201d but claims the company didn\u2019t respond to questions about training. He then says that OpenAI offered several \u201cproposals,\u201d including one in which Buckmaster could publish a paper announcing the Navier-Stokes problem had been solved by an internal OpenAI model but without Alp\u00f6ge\u2019s name included.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Buckmaster, Alp\u00f6ge, and Anthropic did not immediately respond to WIRED\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the briefing, Bubeck and other OpenAI executives denied that the company had ever inspected the pair\u2019s Codex prompts in order to inform their work. \u201cWe, whether it\u2019s the researchers or the agents, did not see any of their work until it was released publicly last night,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cI want to be extremely clear that we recognize the priority of Levent Alp\u00f6ge and Tristan Buckmaster\u2019s work on unforced Euler, and we have nothing but congratulations to them on this monumental achievement that they have made. To be clear, we did not use their prompt or proof to prompt our models or direct our agents,\u201d said Bubeck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">OpenAI said today it wanted to recognize Alp\u00f6ge and Buckmaster\u2019s prior work. However, Ven Chandrasekaran, a mathematician at the company, also emphasized that their solution was significantly different in nature from the one produced by OpenAI\u2019s model.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">The spat over who gets credit for solving one of the biggest problems in math may rumble on for a while.
