{"id":6677,"date":"2026-09-08T18:57:09","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T18:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6677"},"modified":"2026-09-08T18:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T18:57:09","slug":"apple-and-google-miss-deadline-to-block-child-nudity-on-their-phones-in-the-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/silvybrand.com\/?p=6677","title":{"rendered":"Apple and Google Miss Deadline to Block Child Nudity on Their Phones in the UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In June, the UK government told Big Tech it had three months to make taking, viewing, or sharing images of child nudity on their devices impossible. \u201cI expect tech firms to make that happen,\u201d said then prime minister Keir Starmer. \u201cBut if they choose not to, then we will act and change the law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">That deadline arrived on Tuesday, and the government says that the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/apple\/\" class=\"text link\">Apple<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/google\/\" class=\"text link\">Google<\/a> have failed. As a result, they will be changing the law to introduce what the UK government claims will be world-first legislation of its kind.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While engineers from Apple and Google had been working with the government since June to make changes, \u201cthey do not meet the scale of this crisis,\u201d Lisa Nandy, the secretary of state for digital, culture, media, and sport, told lawmakers on Tuesday as she introduced the legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Under the new plan, companies failing to build the child protection solutions into all existing and newly sold smartphones and tablets in the UK would face fines and potential criminal liability for their bosses. \u201cWe know that this is a sector that can\u2014when required\u2014innovate at an extraordinary pace when the chips are down,\u201d Nandy added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Nandy also plans to explore placing similar legal requirements on apps used by children, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/instagram\/\" class=\"text link\">Instagram<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/tag\/snapchat\/\" class=\"text link\">Snapchat<\/a>. Neither Meta nor Snap immediately responded to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cFor too long, technology companies have failed to protect children from the worst harms,\u201d Nandy said, \u201cand to be frank, I am not prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt that progress will continue at the pace we need it to while harm is being done now.\u201d Still, she said she would reassess whether legislation is necessary if platforms implement solutions while it is being drawn up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cApple and Google needed to urgently introduce these protections to ensure online sexual abuse is disrupted and prevented on children\u2019s devices,\u201d says Chris Sherwood, chief executive of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. \u201cNow the deadline is up, government must crack down and legislate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Not everyone is so keen on the measures, which would not impact adults who had verified their age. In June, messaging app Signal <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/signal.org\/blog\/pdfs\/2026-06-08-uk-surveillance-is-not-safety.pdf\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/signal.org\/blog\/pdfs\/2026-06-08-uk-surveillance-is-not-safety.pdf&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/signal.org\/blog\/pdfs\/2026-06-08-uk-surveillance-is-not-safety.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">accused<\/a> the UK government of using the measures to rush \u201cinvisible surveillance infrastructure\u201d into law. It warned that forcing UK residents to prove their age and have their content scanned in the name of child safety could be a slippery slope into wider surveillance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Apple, meanwhile, says it is working with the UK government in the name of protecting kids. \u201cWe share the UK\u2019s commitment to combating exploitation and abuse online and have shared with UK officials future plans to strengthen Communication Safety and other tools even further to help keep kids safe,\u201d an Apple spokesperson tells WIRED in a statement, pointing to its Communication Safety feature launched in 2021, which blurs photos or videos detected to contain nudity on a child&#8217;s device.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">A Google spokesperson says in a statement that their team is \u201cpleased to have made progress and are fully committed to continuing to work with experts, legislators, app developers and device manufacturers to keep children safe, while also protecting privacy and access to information.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Globally, governments taking more extreme measures to protect children from online harms have been met with backlash over privacy and other digital rights. In the European Union, civil rights activists opposed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/a-majority-of-european-lawmakers-voted-against-letting-big-tech-read-our-messages-theyre-going-to-anyway\/\" class=\"text link\">extended legislation<\/a> allowing tech firms to voluntarily scan users\u2019 private messages for child sexual abuse material. Elon Musk\u2019s X <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/x-says-australias-under-16s-social-media-bans-risk-interfering-with-foreign-law\/\" class=\"text link\">complained<\/a> that the information-gathering powers imposed by Australia\u2019s social media ban risk interfering with international law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">In the UK, Nandy also said the government was considering going further with its sweeping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/uk-social-media-under-16-ban\/\" class=\"text link\">social media ban<\/a> for children under 16, which was announced earlier this year and remains on track to go into effect in spring 2027.
