Coxon, who previously trained systems for OpenAI, accused the two AI companies of \u201cracing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives,\u201d even though \u201cthe people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Industry insiders have long expressed concerns about the potential dangers of self-improving AI systems, which they warn could spiral out of human control in a runaway loop often described as recursive self-improvement. While not yet realized, companies are actively pursuing this goal and much of today\u2019s AI code is written with the help of AI.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">In a direct response, Evan Hubinger, who leads one of Anthropic\u2019s AI safety teams, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EvanHub\/status\/2097528891846074828?s=20\">said<\/a> he worries about self-improving AI, adding that it \u201cis happening faster than we thought.\u201d He also agreed with Coxon\u2019s characterization. \u201cWe really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans,\u201d he said, personally estimating the chances to be greater than one in 10 \u201cwithin the next decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Despite this, Hubinger said Anthropic does \u201cnot yet have a plan\u201d for ensuring advanced AI remains safe and aligned with human values and \u201care not clearly on track to\u201d develop one either. Coxon <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hilbertspaess\/status\/2097476208908972230?s=20\">says<\/a> the companies are \u201clocked in a race\u201d to develop advanced systems first so are pushing ahead \u201cdespite the risk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1044qizi _18mzr4b1 _18mzr4b0 _19wv7tc1\">Coxon\u2019s departure marks one of the most high-profile examples of an employee leaving Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI members following concerns over safety at the company.
