However, when asked if Apple released a folding smartphone, almost 33 percent said they \u201cabsolutely\u201d would.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cApple has such a strong market pull,\u201d Popal tells WIRED. \u201cThe average consumer didn\u2019t know about [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/we-are-in-the-knockout-round-of-price-increases-for-consumer-electronics\/\" class=\"text link\">memory price increases<\/a>] until Apple made an announcement that they\u2019re going to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/buying-a-used-iphone-makes-more-sense-than-ever\/\" class=\"text link\">increase prices<\/a>. \u201cComing into foldables, it&#8217;s going to create overall excitement for the category. And it&#8217;s good for the consumer, too. It&#8217;s always good to have more competition and more choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">One area of concern is the device\u2019s durability and repairability, as folding phones are notoriously more prone to damage and are tough to fix. Elizabeth Chamberlain, director of Sustainability at iFixit, tells WIRED her team has never taken apart a foldable they\u2019d call truly repairable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cManufacturers have come a long way since the Galaxy Fold first dropped,\u201d she says. \u201cBut the gains in durability haven\u2019t come with gains in repairability.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"paywall\">New Economics<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paywall\">While Apple announced three premium iPhone models today, it is not releasing the base iPhone 18 this year\u2014marking the first time it\u2019s breaking up the launch cycle of the core iPhone lineup. Instead, the iPhone 18 is expected to launch in the spring of 2027 alongside the iPhone 18e and second-generation iPhone Air.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Despite the eye-watering price and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/wired-gear-team-tips-on-ways-to-save-money\/\" class=\"text link\">current economic climate<\/a>, Popal says the iPhone Duo is \u201cguaranteed to be a blockbuster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201cApple defied all odds and broke the $1,000 barrier when they first launched the $1,000 smartphone,\u201d Popal says. \u201cYes, there\u2019s going to be sticker shock, but Apple caters to a very high-end consumer segment who can afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">Over the summer, Apple introduced a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/apple-products-are-all-just-subscription-services-now\/\" class=\"text link\">iPhone leasing program<\/a> to help ease the price of its phones on consumers&#8217; wallets, and it\u2019s likely to prove popular with the uber-expensive iPhone Duo. Chamberlain says that for people who replace their phone regularly, it gives them a path to do it where the device gets back into the reuse stream and boosts the refurbished market, which isn\u2019t a bad thing for electronic waste. However, Apple\u2019s leasing agreements mean the device needs to be returned in the condition it was received.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\">\u201ciFixit is committed to the idea that you should own your shit,\u201d she says. \u201cYou should be able to repair things, modify things, hack your own devices. It\u2019s sad to see the tech world move away from that principle, and Apple encouraging people to lease devices instead of buying them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paywall\"><em>This is a developing story.
