It\u2019s more of a preseason kickoff party than anything, a chance for teams and sponsors alike to mingle and network before everyone is at one another\u2019s throats in the spirit of competition.<\/p>\n I see why he dislikes it. He\u2019s about to be paraded around like a prized pony, gawked at and fussed over, made to give a speech and be on his very best behavior for the next several hours. He\u2019s temperamental on a good day, and if he\u2019s being forced to do something he hates? No one is safe. May the universe have mercy on the first person who asks him how he thinks the upcoming season is going to go. They\u2019re about to verbally get their ass handed to them.<\/p>\n \u201cAxel, please.\u201d I sigh, pulling him to a stop so he can face my pleading stare. \u201cI just want to enjoy tonight. I know you hate it all, but I\u2019ve missed this.\u201d<\/p>\n His dipped brow eases, his glare a little less severe. \u201cRight, you\u2019ve been away from this bullshit.\u201d He\u2019s quiet as he shifts uncomfortably, probably remembering the why<\/em> behind my absence. \u201cAre you sure you want to be here?\u201d<\/p>\n I understand his hesitance. Rumors pushed me out of my job and the world of Formula 1, and showing up again is sure to refuel them. And with six Constructors\u2019 Championships under his belt, I\u2019d say he\u2019s accomplished that.<\/p>\n I, on the other hand, haven\u2019t accomplished much\u2014unless you count being at the center of a scandal that ended with me being asked to leave the team.<\/p>\n I level Axel with a hard stare when he doesn\u2019t look convinced by my answer. \u201cDo you think I\u2019d be wearing a gown and heels that pinch my toes if I didn\u2019t want to be here?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI know you love playing dress\u2011up.\u201d He snorts, green eyes rolling. \u201cHave you talked to Omid yet?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s the one who sent me to wait for you.\u201d It was more about getting me away from the team\u2019s sponsors he was speaking with, since he was unwilling to address my surprise reappearance. \u201cAnd now that you\u2019ve graced us with your presence, I can go have fun with people I actually like.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m the highlight of your night,\u201d he says matter\u2011of\u2011factly. \u201cBut fine, go socialize with the enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n I bristle at the way he refers to my best friend as the enemy<\/em>, but considering she\u2019s the sister of one of the McMorris F1 team drivers, he\u2019s not completely wrong.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd you<\/em> can go find my father,\u201d I instruct as he puts a hand to my shoulder to start nudging me forward. \u201cYou\u2019re all sup-posed to be onstage for a speech in twenty minutes. Specter Energy\u2019s up after Omega Siluro.\u201d<\/p>\n Axel dramatically mimes that he can\u2019t hear me over the noise and music before dropping his hand and melting into the crowd, likely in search of the nearest exit. Whatever. At least I got him in here. I made no promises about making him stay. Besides, it\u2019s not like Dad can fire me all over again.<\/p>\n A flash of blonde hair in my periphery has me turning to catch the enemy<\/em> approaching, her trademark scowl lightening when she spots me.<\/p>\n \u201cAbout time you came back in,\u201d Edith Maxwell\u2011Brown grumbles. \u201cDo you have any idea how many creepy old men I had to fend off while you were gone?\u201d<\/p>\n I give her a quick scan, taking in her black taffeta gown and its sweetheart neckline, accented by the teardrop diamond necklace resting just below her collarbones. She looks amazing on a normal day, but she\u2019s a full\u2011blown stunner tonight. \u201cAt least two dozen,\u201d I answer. \u201cThose guys are plentiful around here.\u201d And so is their money.<\/p>\n \u201cPlace is practically overrun with them.\u201d Edith grabs two flutes of champagne from a passing waiter\u2019s tray but hesitates on offering one to me. \u201cAre you drinking tonight?\u201d she asks quietly. \u201cWasn\u2019t sure if you\u2019d changed your mind since the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n It\u2019s a thoughtful question, since I\u2019ve spent the better part of a year abstaining completely\u2014except at her brother\u2019s wedding last weekend\u2014all for the goal of preparing my body to carry a future baby. Still, I have to fight to keep a smile on my face as I take the glass from her, because there\u2019s a big part of me that wants to cry.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m taking a break from IUI for a while. The last round\u2019s failure took a lot out of me.\u201d I lift the glass in a mocking toast to me not being pregnant. \u201cSo I\u2019ll be drinking expensive champagne and eating all the soft cheese my heart desires until I\u2019m ready to try again.\u201d<\/p>\n She taps the rim of her flute against mine. \u201cThat\u2019s the spirit. You\u2019ll miss them when they\u2019re gone.\u201d<\/p>\n Her mention of when<\/em>, not if<\/em>, buoys me a little, as if it\u2019s just a matter of time before I spot two little lines on a pregnancy test. I\u2019ve dreamed of one day being a mom ever since I lost my own, wanting to build a family to pass along the love she gave me and to support my kids in the way I wish I could have been by my remaining parent. I want to be everything for a child that my mother was for me.<\/p>\n But the harsh reality is that it\u2019s been eight months of trying and I\u2019m no closer to making my dream come true.<\/p>\n Logically, I know<\/em> that less than a year isn\u2019t a long time to be trying for a baby. It\u2019s not even long enough to be hit with a diagnosis of infertility. But having to keep waiting because my body has decided Hmm, no, I don\u2019t think we want to do that<\/em> is the letdown of the century.<\/p>\n \u201cMy doctor thinks it\u2019s time to move to IVF, so maybe I\u2019ll have better luck with that,\u201d I say, trying to remain positive despite the slow creep of disappointment month after month. \u201cBut she did warn me that I\u2019m heading into advanced maternal age<\/em> territory.\u201d I scoff. \u201cShe might as well have just called me old. I mean, come on, I\u2019m thirty\u2011four, not eighty\u2011four. I\u2019m not even old enough to run for president.\u201d<\/p>\n I can joke all I want, but I know basic biology. Growing older means this process will only get more complicated. It\u2019s why I finally said to hell with waiting to find the perfect partner to do this with\u2014I just had to go for it before I lost my best window of opportunity. I\u2019m grateful that there are procedures and techniques that allow me to do this as a single woman, but even still, it\u2019s starting to feel like a task that only ends in heartbreak.<\/p>\n I\u2019ll be okay, though, no matter the ultimate outcome. Like my mother always liked to remind me, it\u2019s okay to stumble down the path of what you want, as long as you keep going.<\/p>\n \u201cMy mum had my youngest sister when she was in her forties. You\u2019ll be fine,\u201d Edith reassures me. \u201cBesides, if it doesn\u2019t work, you can just take one of my kids. I don\u2019t really need any past the heir and the spare.\u201d<\/p>\n I purse my lips to fight a smile. She loves her four beautiful, hell\u2011raising children dearly, though she\u2019s very glad to be away from them tonight. If my future kid turns out like any of hers . . . Well, I\u2019m going to have a riot on my hands from day one, but I welcome it. \u201cStill considering that,\u201d I admit. \u201cThey\u2019re pretty cute.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTake the littlest. She\u2019s already talking about wanting to be an F1 driver like her Uncle Thomas. You and your dad can make her into a champion.\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019m not sure how useful I\u2019d be, considering I\u2019ve never worked in any sort of driver development department and my brief karting career wasn\u2019t particularly successful, mostly because I was more interested in playing racing video games than actually being on\u2011track. My dad, however, might have better luck, considering he turned Axel from a kid with an attitude problem into a world champion (with an attitude problem).<\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s see if Dad will talk to me long enough to even bring it up,\u201d I say dryly before taking a sip of my champagne, savoring the fizz. I might as well enjoy myself tonight before going back to my structured life of no booze and preemptive prenatal vitamins soon enough.<\/p>\n \u201cThings haven\u2019t gotten better between you?\u201d<\/p>\n I shake my head. \u201cIt\u2019s the whole reputation thing, you know? I embarrassed him, the team, the Farahani name . . . I think he\u2019s still trying to get over it. It was easier to push me away than stand up for me.\u201d<\/p>\n Edith huffs her disappointment, but our conversation is interrupted by applause carrying from the other side of the massive event space, where the next pair of drivers and team principal have taken the stage. They\u2019re being interviewed by the host for this evening, some British comedian who\u2019s clearly been instructed to be on his best behavior, if his lackluster routine is anything to go by.<\/p>\n \u201cGod, this is painful,\u201d Edith mutters as we listen to yet another set of media\u2011trained drivers say nearly the exact same thing as the last batch. \u201cHad I known it was going to be this bad, I wouldn\u2019t have asked you to be my date tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n Bad as it is, I\u2019m glad she insisted I stay in London for the week after the wedding so that I could be her plus\u2011one to this horror show. It\u2019s not often we get to spend this much time together, and it\u2019s even rarer for me to take an extended\u2014but much needed\u2014vacation from my freelance graphic design job. Being your own boss has some perks, but it can be tough running a business as a one\u2011woman show.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ll never understand why they make them do this.\u201d I take another sip of champagne to keep from wincing in second-hand embarrassment, even if part of me is gleefully enjoying it. \u201cIf they want to talk, let them, but this feels like torture for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI would never tell any of them to their faces to shut up and drive,\u201d she says, \u201cbut fucking hell, please<\/em> shut up and drive. They\u2019re much better at that.\u201d<\/p>\n She can claim that she wouldn\u2019t say it to their faces, but I know better than to believe it. In the five years Edith Maxwell-Brown and I have been friends, she\u2019s never once been anything but blunt. We met in the paddock at the Spanish Grand Prix when she marched up to me and pointed at the embarrassing coffee stain on the white shirt of my team uniform, quickly declaring it unacceptable for me to be seen with. She then whipped a stain\u2011removing pen out of her handbag to fix it for me. She only introduced herself in her posh English accent after I stuttered my thanks, and even then, it was with curt directness and a handshake so firm I swore my bones squeaked.<\/p>\n It\u2019s what makes her an excellent businesswoman. And minus the handshake, it\u2019s what makes her a great friend too, because I\u2019ve never once had to wonder what she really means. She just says it.<\/p>\n She\u2019s right about how boring this is, but it\u2019s not stopping me from basking in it. Of course I\u2019ve missed the racing and on-track action, but I\u2019ve longed for the little things too, like the awkwardness of the drivers and the interviews that show that their talents are best displayed behind the wheel.<\/p>\n The world at large puts them on such a pedestal, and in some ways, they deserve it. It\u2019s a sport with only a handful of spots available\u2014you have to be the best of the best just to make it here. But underneath it all, they\u2019re still remarkably human. Every driver I\u2019ve worked with, including the ones I secretly couldn\u2019t stand, has had the same typical wants and needs and fears as the rest of us mere mortals. Even my little shit of an adoptive brother, a champion with more inevitable accolades in his future, is just flesh and blood like the rest of us. They\u2019re undoubtedly special people, yes, and I\u2019ve missed being able to see that up close and personal, but I\u2019ll always cherish the moments when I saw them as only human. It\u2019s one of the things I miss the most.<\/p>\n We clap politely when the Omega Siluro drivers wave to the crowd as they conclude their interview, but the applause picks up when they leave the stage and the Specter Energy boys take their place.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my god,\u201d I groan when I spot that Axel has somehow found and added a bow tie to his outfit, as if that were the missing part to make his ensemble black\u2011tie appropriate. \u201cI didn\u2019t think this could get worse.\u201d<\/p>\n Edith snickers, eyes flicking over him. \u201cHe\u2019s lucky he\u2019s cute.\u201d Then her eyes cut to me. \u201cHow have you never been interested in him?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019ve told you before,\u201d I say patiently, keeping my voice low. \u201cWhile Axel is a very handsome man, he\u2019s\u201d\u2014I lift a finger to start counting\u2014\u201cone: not my type, and two: my dad\u2019s favorite child. He even speaks Farsi better than I do, the bastard.\u201d I clear my throat to dislodge the bitterness and add a third finger. \u201cThree: He\u2019s eight years younger than me, and I\u2019ve known him since he was a teenager, which is bad enough on its own. And four\u201d\u2014I raise a final finger\u2014\u201cHaving a child with an F1 driver does not<\/em> sound like fun, which is arguably the most important factor at this stage in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n Besides, just the rumor of being romantically tied to a driver can be nearly life\u2011ruining. I\u2019ve already learned my lesson.<\/p>\n Edith contemplates my list. \u201cI get it. Not sure I\u2019d want to raise a kid with a man who\u2019s gone nine months of the year either.\u201d<\/p>\n Exactly. I wouldn\u2019t wish that part of how I was raised on any kid, let alone my own.<\/p>\n We listen, occasionally rolling our eyes, grimacing, and even chuckling as Axel and his teammate Raphael Marchand go through the motions of the interview. When it comes to charisma, the Frenchman wins ten times over, but Axel\u2019s wit and dry humor are charming in their own way, especially when he discusses how it feels to be racing again after last season\u2019s crash at the Singapore Grand Prix, one that could have ended his career, just like it did for Lorenzo Castellucci.<\/p>\n \u201cShit,\u201d Edith swears under her breath, and I glance over to find her frowning at her phone. \u201cSomething\u2019s come up at work. I\u2019m so sorry, but I have to go.\u201d<\/p>\n I\u2019m used to her bailing early or canceling our plans completely because of her job, but my stomach still sinks. There\u2019s always some kind of drama going down in the hotel business, and it\u2019s been even more dramatic since her father overlooked her for a much\u2011deserved promotion to CEO of their family\u2019s company after years of practically running the place herself. He picked her completely useless older brother, Andrew, instead, but after recovering from the initial shock of it all, Edith decided not to take that as a final answer.<\/p>\n \u201cMore Andrew chaos?\u201d I ask.<\/p>\n She nods. \u201cStaging a coup really is so much work,\u201d she says airily, but there\u2019s a steel to it too. \u201cYou can come with me if you\u2019d like, but I don\u2019t think you really want to watch me ream him and a bunch of solicitors into the wee hours of the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile I\u2019m sure that will be entertaining, I think I\u2019ll stick around.\u201d I touch her wrist in gratitude. \u201cThanks again for letting me crash at your flat this week. I wasn\u2019t sure if staying with \u201cSomeone might as well inhabit that place while we move into the new house.\u201d She shoots me a wink, then sobers. \u201cPlease<\/em> don\u2019t trip over any more boxes, I really don\u2019t want you ending up in hospital. But feel free to pack a few. That shit\u2019s never-ending.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOh, I\u2019m aware. At least you only moved across the city and not the Atlantic.\u201d<\/p>\n I hauled ass back to the US after getting fired, partially because my UK residency was tied to a work visa, but also because I wanted\u2014honestly, needed<\/em>\u2014a fresh start. Unfortunately, I\u2019m still unpacking everything I accumulated over ten years in England and I fear it may never end.<\/p>\n \u201cAnd whose fault is that, babe?\u201d She leans in for an air\u2011kiss. \u201cWe\u2019re still on for breakfast tomorrow, I promise. I\u2019m going to make the most of my last day with you before you fuck off back across the pond.\u201d<\/p>\n I smile, air\u2011kissing her other cheek. \u201cI\u2019ll see you in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAnd if you don\u2019t, it\u2019s because I\u2019m in jail for fratricide.\u201d<\/p>\n She knocks back the rest of her champagne, hands the glass off to a waiter, and then she\u2019s gone.<\/p>\n It leaves me to turn my attention back to the stage, where my father is animatedly discussing Specter Energy\u2019s confident outlook for the season. As he speaks, I\u2019m reminded of all the speeches he gave at the end of team meetings, how they\u2019d meander and seemingly veer wildly off topic yet always circle back around and end with a poignant question to consider.<\/p>\n I used to walk away either dazed, confused, or truly in-spired and usually found myself huddled up with the rest of Specter\u2019s marketing and social media teams, who were also trying to figure out what the hell he was on about. It\u2019s an odd thing to miss, but listening to him tonight makes the ache of what I lost hurt a little more.<\/p>\n My father gives a reserved wave to the crowd as they wrap up the segment, and I sip my champagne while they depart the stage, half listening as the host cracks more terrible jokes. Without Edith by my side, this is decidedly less fun. Especially with all the eyes that are suddenly upon me.<\/p>\n I\u2019m nowhere near conceited enough to think everyone here knows who I am, but plenty of them do\u2014and plenty of them are staring. Part of me expected this, to be looked at and whispered about, but another part was more optimistic. Surely there\u2019s better gossip to dwell on. The talk should be about Lorenzo Castellucci\u2019s tell\u2011all interview that dropped a few days ago and shook the world of F1 with some of its revelations\u2014like the teammate sabotage at McMorris or him taking full responsibility for the crash that nearly killed him and two other drivers in Singapore. More attention travels my way when the host announces that Mascort is the next team to take the stage, and it quickly becomes obvious that nope<\/em>, there isn\u2019t better gossip tonight. God, I should have gone home to my cats after the wedding. At least their judgmental stares are cute.<\/p>\n With Edith\u2019s invitation tonight, I hoped I could dip my toe back into this world, maybe find a way to keep wading until I was immersed again. So far, all I\u2019ve proven to myself is that I was right to move on. I was right to focus on building a version of my life that I could be equally excited about.<\/p>\n Except I\u2019m still stuck digging the foundation of that new life. It\u2019s been a year and a half since I left Specter. Eight months of fruitless IUI after saving up and fighting to get it covered by my crappy self\u2011employed insurance. Too long of wanting and waiting and wishing for things to happen that just don\u2019t seem to want to come to fruition.<\/p>\n And yet every day I make myself open the metaphorical curtains and feel the sun on my face because I\u2019ve seen how dark life can be, how grief can steal away the light, and I\u2019m determined not to let it drag me back to the shadows.<\/p>\n Taking a cue from Edith, I down my drink and slip through the crowd until I reach the back of the room, wanting to hide for a bit, at least until this part is over. But when the applause starts and reaches a near\u2011deafening level, I can\u2019t help but glance over my shoulder, looking back toward the stage.<\/p>\n And there he is.
